And if he had been spared ho would have been present next month at the Leads Festival to conduct some of his works.

It was a wooder that Gring lived to be no vid as sixty-four' since his whole life' was one' struggle against ill-health. He did it by living quietly in the hills of his native Norway, giving himself upto that nature lafusnco which is no strong in his work. Grieg during his life was never able to stand much prolonged offre, which doubtless is partly the reason that he wrote so few works of large calibre ; but perhaps the miniature art to which he devoted himself was, after all, best suited to his genius..

modern criticism, lo an age when everything is dona on a large scale, to judge music by its quantity as well as its quality. A man who writes a great song is surely, however, a better creative artist than 'one who writes a dozen moderately good symphonies.

In the short art forms in which he mainly wrote, Grieg proved himself a true tone-poet, and much of his music is as beautiful and deeply felt as anything which has ever been writted. Is there anything more pathetic in modern music than the lament over Asse's death ip "Pear Gyat," or more exquisitely fragrant than. "Solvjeg's Cradle Fong," or more gay, and melodious than the "Spring Song" for thể piang? These and other pieces may seem a little faded to some' of us, but is that not because they are so hackneyed, such universal favourites?

A MODERN IMPRESSIONIST,

This exceeding brevity of much of his work has often called forth the criticism that itzis * scrappy"; but in two pagerial muile Griag has often expressed as much as another would do in twelve, Frankly impressionistic, his musc is only concerned with painting a definite,pic- ture, and when it has done that it stops, Griegi never had any concern.fr making sound-pat. terns of purely formal beauty.

To writing of his musical style, which, ar ́s new idiom, attracted so much attention on ite first appearance, it has become a ommonplace to say that it is essentially national and Nor: wegian. But I think that >orway owes more to Grieg than Grieg to Norway. He used folk. tunas largely, of course, anıl also some charac- teristic Norwegian barmonies; but his music, even where it is most national-in character, is after all, Norway' viewed through his own picturesque individuality.
