The Osaka Mainichi observes that the pre- sent loss of fire insurance offices in Japan là one fire is the largest known in this country. In addition to the fire offices already mention. ed, the Osaka, Niishú, Nzigai and Ryokwan y and other maller offices have suffered more or less. The loss of the various companies, co- cerned is said to range from Voo,coo to ¥2,000po. The Hakodate fire may be fatal 10 some of the smaller companies whose foundations are not sound. It is stated that the Government is ready to take determined measures against any company which may hesitate to settle claims without good and valid reason, and they may consequently be fo cr ed to settle the claims without delay. Thelending companies, which value the confidence reposed inthem, will not hesitate to settle, even without Government interference. In, settling the claims, the Mainichi thinker, the insurance offices may be forced to withdraw their deposits in the backs, or dispose of the stocks held by them, and consequently some of the banks, which have to "meet" a ́large”demand" from by insurance office, may be placed in some difficulty in paying out a very large sum. Further, when stocks are disposed of to a large amount by the insurance offices, the stock market, which is inclined to go down, may become much more depressed, perhaps results ing in considerable financial strain,-Japan Chronicle,
