Long before this he had begun that long series of periodical visits to St. Petersburg, Moscow, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Paris, and pl above all, London. "On my first visit to Manchester," he said, "I was asked by the Philharmonic Society 'to play something bright and tupeful. Just fancy such a request coming from the Philharmonic Society now!" He cordially recognised the great advances made by English musical taste with the period of his recollection,
