The following interesting particulars appear in the Japan Gazette concerning the wreck of the WA, the message being dated Matsuzaki, Izu, August 18th image! *
The disaster that befell the German steamer Wth off Iza Province on the gib instant bas attracted your correspondent to this sanside town, where the ill-fated verspi is now lying, 45.8still on fire. Leaving Hirauma by the even
ing express on the 19th, 1 stayed overo’ght at Numara, whence one of the Tokyo Bay S. §. Co.'s small boats was expected to be dispatched for shimoda, vid intermediate, “ports" (888) shore village or towns), at 5 o'clock next morn ing. But the boat actually weighed anchor about two hours later than expected owing to PRATA EAST, Rr East Point the Idading of a comparatively large quantity of goods. The boat was, however, fortunately a new-comer on this line, being larger and. speedier than those hitherto in service. The gid

Steaming along the picturesque coast with the Izu Penin- suis range on the portside as against the deepsea of Sagami-Nada on starboard, the boat arrived at my destination shortly before 11 o'clock, rie eight "ports." Captain) and the Fourth Engineer, who are awaiting instructions from the steamship com pany concerned while watching the wreck. The departing members of the ex-crew shouted "Hip, Hip, Hurrah "thren times when the time came to bid Sayonara to the wreck of the Wik which is no longer their home. They were seen off with sympathy by local people who Rasembled along the senshore.
Meanwhile our sampan was pulled ashore. 1 immediately took up my headquarïèrs at the inn just vacated by the German seamen. It is situated on the seaside facing the wreck. My first question put before the inn-keepress was as to the interpreter, who first met he German upon their landing at the old-style town of Matsuzaki, She seemed to be. proud of replying that fortunately a certain Tokyo student had heen staying at this on for the summer vacation and promptly acted as an interpreter, otherwise the Germans would have been unable to communicate the disaster to Yokohama. Having had an interview with the alleged student, I was compelled to beg his pardon, myself and on behalf of the inn-keep ress, for he was not a student but a Sub-Lieut.. enani, M. The officer, Sab-Lieut, Tsutomu Kubotani, had been enjoying a vacation owing. to indisposition.

old, and his body is missing. Another version tays his remains may be recovered in the wreck. The steamer had four-life-boats but they were also blown up in ite explosion. Lile-buoys only were available. Six Chinese were the first to escape and were rescued by a fishing
boat. The rest of the crew were also saved by 6shing boats and brought to Matsuzaki. As the fire started from hatch No. 2 between the forecastle and bridge, those in service on the bows were compelled to run through the flames towards the stera to find a way of escape and thereby sustained iofurici. The survivors had no time to save their effects and all the documents and instruments of the steamer were re-
duced to ashes, excepting the fox, Captain Carstens and all others were removed to fiiking boala in the working clothes they were at the time of extinguishing, the fire, "The most of the saved crew wore only undershirts and trousers. Some of them were barefooted and used word when they left for Yokohama (his morning (the 18th).
The steamer on fire was brought to M-tsuzaki at 6 p.m. on the 16th in tow of three stram which had been taking shelter at a hbouring port. It was detained ava point about 700 metres from the shore by means of a rope, the depth of water being about five fathoms. When the steamer was brought their hatches Nor, 3 and 4 had not yet been affected, While the local police and fire brigades were Tandoning assistance on board or Deaf the butoing vessel throughout the night, two ar three expletion took place in succession. in hatch No. 4 about 2 aim, on the 17th. The portalde was broken st section near the stern while some plates on the starboard Were also blown off. The policemen and fireman had narrow escapes."
The raport
of the explosion was much more revere than that of the explosion of a mine, as 1 as told by Lieutenant Kubo. Places of iron. were thrown about, some
the shore. Teaching The town of Matsuzaki and the neighbouring villages were considerably shaken, and pee
people res out of their houses. SÃolf and frames in some houses fell down and bottles a chemist's shop were thrown from the shelves. Japanese of all ages then assembled on the shore from various directions to witness the occurrence well as foreigners whom most of the inhabitants had not seen before. The town was crowded with spectat rs from neighbouring villages on the 16th and 17th in greater numbers than at the time of the annusi festivals in the loc ditv.
The cause of the, fire is ni yat
Abraonced, but is believed to have been an explosion of chemicals among the cuigh, A raming says that the fire was caused by, friction-of matches on account of the tossing of the steamer during the storm, Ths cargo of the Wik consisted of paper, Iron and steil, sugar, cement, chemicals, etc.
