MINT AND BRISK TRADE,

SOME UNPRECEDENTED RECORDS'IN OUTPUT CE COINS.

There are some significant observations in be annual report of the Deputy Master and Comptroller of the Mint for 906, which throw an interesting light on the activity of trade during that period.

It is recorded that the total colpage of the year, both an regards number and value, wa above the average of the previous ten years.**

The year was characterised by exceptionally heavy demands for Imaerial coins in each of the thres colbage metals, No less than to millions of such coins were struck, a gure which has only once before been exceeded. That was in 1950, when about icy) millions were produced. The increase in the Imperial coln. age was, however, accompanied by a great falling-off in the volume of the colonial coin. age, brought about by the complete cessation of demande from Hongkong. Still the total of the jear created a record.

LIGHT SOVEREIGNS" Gold ballion of the value of £52,541,065 WAI imported into the Mint for coinaga during the year. The gold colos weighed at the Bank of England during the year emount to 49.756,045 pieces, au compared with 49,956,508 in 1905. The percentage of light sovereigns was more than in the previous year, while that of balf- sovereigns was higher than in any year since

--1894——-~~

It was thought probable that the demand for silver coin for the United Kingdom would show some improvement on 1905, but the 'actual in- crease as much greater than was anticipated, notwithstanding the fact that no issues of new coip were made to cutland and Ireland.

The total number of silver coins issued (ex- cluding Maundy money) was 19,413,578, **); against 12,316,180 in 1975 The amount taken by the Bank of England exceeded the total of tbe issues to the United Kingdom for the pre- vious four years.

I bere was a profit on the purchases of silver bullied and worn silver coin together at the rate of 40.43 per cent. The average price paid for silver bullion, purchased for coinage, was 31-6d per ounce standard, or 3-16d. more than that of the metal in the London market during 1946. The average price of silver in the London market for 1936 was 30fd, or a rise of 3 1-160, per ounce on 1995. The lowest quota. tion was zgd.

UNPRECEDENTED). DEMAND FOR BRONZE.

The issue of Imperial bronze coin for 1906 exceeded that of any year since 1862. The issues in the last thịes menths of the year wete quite unprecedented. 1 undon was a la ge customer, absorbing thrice as much as was issued in the metropolitan district during the same months la 1,05,

A proportion of this demand was due to the activity of grade which bad penetrated even to Tn. The the travelling and street hawker class' recent development of electric tramways had also a stimulating effect on the demand for
