COMPOSITORS' "HOWLERS."

HOW PROOF-READERS STIFLE HUMOUR.... Ever since printing was invented a duel has boen in progress in the printing offices of the world between, the compositor and the proof. reader. It is the compositor's duty to “set-up ". that which appears in, bis "copy," but some- times becauss he is unable to decipher the maascript, or because his soul soars above re- strictions, or, again, because he is thinking of things other than his work, he perpetrates howlers that if allowed to reach the public would add greatly to the galety of nations.

Unfortunately, or fortunataly—it all depends on the point of view-theks lapsas on the part of the compositor rarely come under the notice of the gon; ral pubile. They are--or they should beatified immediately after their birth by the proof-render, whose duty it is to see that the compositer does not misrepresent the author..

Sometimes, however, the proof-reader node, and in this connection the inte Lord, Goachen told, at a public dinner, a story of a reader who worked for his (Lord Goschen's) grandfather, and who, in answer to a denunciation from this employer, cried-

It is when a reader is in this soulful condi- tion that the general public are permitted to road, as they did once in a morning paper not given to humour, that a celebrated polnician, lo s.speech, described someone as" sitting at the feet of the game.bird of Birmingham," instead of Gamaliel." In the same journal, too, the following startling announcement appeared under the heading of "Births:"-

During a recent election a daily referred to the popularity of the well-known Lancashire foxes." This quaint mistake was due primarily to the telegraph operator, who neglected to supply capital letters for what should have read "Land-Fox," a member of which well-knowD tamily was one of the candidates. STOPPED IN TIME.

"Come over and try some now 'soup,'"'n lady novelist did not write; 'songs" was the word. "It is a sickly kopje' of the real article" was perhaps excusable. It appeared in a paper during the Boar war. These mistakes are curious.snough, but they pale into signific ance before some of those that never reach the. printed sheet; and the "Express" mentions

Abbreviations are at timics the bane of the compositor, but he had no excuse for setting: up, in an account of a Mansion House fanc- tion, that among those present were "Old I-aar and Old Treloar."
