WOMEN, IN FACTORIES
HOW THEIR NUMBERS ARE INCREASING.
Women are becoming more and more com- petitive in the Industrial field, according to the is{7- latest report of the larpector of factorier and workshops. In all the lighter forms of employ ment the woman is displacing the man, and the tendency of modern industrialism is to employ woman, t
Child labour is, however, very largely muda use of, and in spite of the vigilance of the State - many of these toilers are little slaves. In the Nouingham lace district school childmn; of from five to eleven are employed at home dur ing the dinner hour at the lace drawing and clipping Industry which is a notoriously sweat- ad one. There are many sad homes in. Not» tingham where he father is out of, work and the mother and children are toiling at:lacs; for, which from Id. to 2jd. per dozen yards of from six to twelve breadtha is paid.
דיו
SURVIVAL OF THE OLD TIME:
In Dunden' the conditions are equally bad.. for the halftime children employed in the spinning mills, and attending at the same time the mill schools. Ona of the schools' is des- cribed as á survival of the old bad, time when, arrow-chested children sat on backlessbruchis and there was no sort of playground.
In the North of Ireland, in the counties of Antrim and Down, out of 50,631. persons am...... played in the textile factories, 13,691 are under.. 18 years of age, and of this number 4,144 are half-timers. The children are ill-partured and losufficiently fed, and in Belsait they are usually employed on the alternate day, 'system," the bor being 5,30 am. to 6 pim, with three- quarters of an hour for breakfast and dinner.
LABEL LICKING.
Label licking in still done by striall:girls in: some of the large English factories, though in. the thread mills of Scotland special machinery has been introduced. The girls employed are very young, the eldest being not more than 15, and the langues of most of them have the polished tip characteristic of the label Isckers,
and the rest of the tongue costed with brown gum.
The girls complain of the gum faiting un pleasant, Yet in one factory trouble had been experienced in introducing machinery, for the. purpose, the older hands, who had become ax- jetla, preferring the primitive method.
INFANT MORTALITY.
The comparativa' cheapness of 'woman's labour, says the inspector, is, under such cir cumstances, dearly paid for by the nation in. which the tendency of madera industrialism is Is substitute the mother for the father as the brend winner of the family. The infant mol ality resulting from the employment of married women in the Potteries is very hi, h, and, says: Dr Reid, the damage done cannot entirely measured by mortality figures, for these take no account of the impaired, vitality of l'a infants, who manage to swell the ranks of the degenerate.
Such
a insult was foresee, and dreaded by the Staffordshire potters to years ago, on the introduction of mechanical power. 7
Moreover, the demand for șamen labour le increasing with the increasing use of machinery, In the boot factories and in the textile tradės this is particularly noticeable. In certain of the rougher class of work' the employment of women and girls is a thing of the past, largely gattributable to a growing sentiment against"
pasting them to such objectionable work,
· The above signals will, as heretofore, de holated only when typhoons exist in such positions or are moving in such directions that information regarding them is considered to be of importance to the Colony or to shippi leaving the harbour.

Ceylon thousands of books of coupon for which These coupons the recipient could sell-that | is if he lound' any one who would buy them with his eyes open-for a sum sufficient to ra coup him the money he had paid to the alim Sialkote trader, and he in his turo could sell to someone else; the inducement being a prize, That the V.P.P. Dystem could be used for such a purpose is remarkable enough, but that so many months should elapse before action to prevent it could be taken is more remarkable still.. Of course, it is in the option of the ad- dressee to refuse to jako delivery of a · V.P.P. parcel at any time, in which case it is returne ed to the sender, which is mulct: ie the post. as and commission charges. But the best proof that the majority of the people to whom ihate mysterious parcels were sent accepted delivery of them is found in the fact that the local G.P.Q. has bad to employ extra assist. ance to deal with the parcelo, some of which were refused. The Acting Postmaster General of Ceylon, Mr. W. C.
