Canton, and August.
The police authorities have issued a notifi cation prohibiting horse riding in the street of the city, as many serious accidents have occurred owing to narrowness of the streets in the city. Persons found borse riding through the streets will be arrested and be heavily fined. When Viceroy Shum was in office here, the last time, he also ordered the pro bibition of horse riding in the public streets"

DEATH OF MR. A J. BOWDEN,
CHIEF ENGINEER
It is with regret that we have to chronicle the death of Mr. A. J. Bowden, chief engineer of the French steamer Handf-Capt. P. Merlees--belonging to the Compagnie de Navigation Tonkinaise, of which Mr. A. R. Marty is the local agent. The Manol arrived in port early this morning, and brought the sad news. It appears that just before the vessel left Haiphong, os the gist ultimo, Mr Bowden was feeling a little unwell, and consulted a doctor who prescribed for him. The ship left at 2.30 p.m. with the chief at his post as usual, but at 4:35, when the vessel had just crossed the bar, and the pilot boarded off, Mr. Bowden
suddenly very ill and expired almost im mediately. Under the circumstances, Capt. Merices had to cousign the corpen, of his comrade to the sea and the ceremony took | place the following morning "with" all-don solemnity and decorum, Mr. Bowden was one of the oldest servants of the company, having joined it sonis eight years ago, first as second engineer of the steamer Fur in which he was promoted to chief engineer.
