with no more than 2,000 tons of cargo, A new line, named the Russo-Chinese Steam Navigation and Trading Company, has just been formed to trade, between, the Black Sen ports and the Far East, touching at the chief parts of India, Indo-Chin, and 'Chins, Dal- ny, Vladivostock, and other ports of the Kamchatka and Sea of Okhotsk. At present the line consists of two steamers, the "Kiakhta" (5,500 tons) and the "Ourga" (3,500 tons). But this number is to be increased. The head- quarters of the line are at Odessa. The firm of Anastasief and Vorov, of Vladivostock and Shanghai (represented in Odessa by Mr. Trapani), are opening a new line between Odessa and other Black Sea pors, Vladivostock, and San Francisco. The first chartered steam. ship was to have salied from Novorossisk to San Francisco with a cargo of cement when the sank. This has retarded the execution of the scheme, but it is understood that before the accident another steamer had already been chartered by this company. Others are to be added if the first journey is successful. This line will eventually amalgamate with a Russe. Chinese Steam. Navigation and Trading Company.

But the man of moderate means should never invest a dollar in any speculative enter- prise without earnestly and anxiously consider. ing the wisdom and propriety of such a step. The very fact that large returns are promised I notice of the considerable amount of risk involved in that affair." In our day absolutely, safe investments-lika municipal bonds of unquestionable validity-yield very modest rates of interest. The same is true of the solid and trustworthy savings banks and insurance GREEN ISLAND CEMENT COMPANY, companies. The greater the promised gaib, the greater the chance of loss.

This is a matter of common sease. The truth needs no emphasizing, What, however, does need emphasizing in our era of publicity and speculation is that the men of small means the wage worker, the clerk, the small mer. chan, the struggling professional man-bould' think thrice before entering the speculailva field at all. Not only reasonable prudence and thrift, bat a sense of obligation to his family or dependents, and to himself, should deter him from 'taking chance" and running the risks inseparable from all speculation. For him the only proper, the only right and Intelligent course is to deposit his savings with some con- Belyative bank or in life insurance or outright purchase of stable securities. Now and then a savings bank fails, but for one dollar lost through such a failure, thousands are lost in speculativo investments-Chicago Record Herald.
