Now the remarkable thing in the case alluded to was that the contraband opium had been concealed in a lifeboat, and in the air-tank space of the lifeboat in such a way that the planks of the boat had to be torn open in order to expose the hiding place of the opium. The Captaio and his officers would hardly dream that they would have to tear their ship and boats to pieces in order to discover a possible cache for contraband opium. On that day, as usual, the gambling game, began again and the money passed freely between the players, until, it is reported, the Northerners, discover ing themselves to be considerably "out," cused the Cantonese of card-sharping and other malpractices, which the Southerners resented The result of this was, as frequently occurs in gambling quarrels, a free faction fight, which took place on deck.. At first those in authority on board took no notice, belleving it to be a common daily occurrence, until it was noticed that the disturbance was assuming much graver proportions. A Northerner was flung to the deck in a wounded condition-and then the fight began in all seriousness.
