THRILLING SEA tale OF THE ARCTIC,

WRECKED CREW'S REFUGE ON AN ICEBERO.

There arrived last night at Scalloway, on the west side of the Shetlands, the Norwegian atodmas Konigsberg, baving on board the ship. wrecked crew of the Norwegian sealer Prince Olaj, the captain of which giver a thrilling narrative of his terrible experience after losing his vassal in the arctic region.

Capt, Karl Godi, who speaks English imper- |fectly, states that the Prince Olaf, carrying a crew of to men, left Ollasund, in Norway, for the seal fishing ground on 16 April. The weather was fine at the start, but when coming up to the ice they experienced gules 'sad a' heavy sea. The weather continued rough,

CAUSHED IN THE ICE. Coming to gap in the ice the capiato observed a large number of seals through the break; and he decided to run through hoping to have smoother water and secure the seals,

On 29 May the vessel was headed in through. an inlet in the ice, and while sailing through the ice suddenly closed, crushing the bottom our of the ship, and leaving the wreck of the upper portion on top of the ice: The crew were all on deck at the time, and managed to get out two boats. They were able to secure some clothing, a small quantity, of coal, and some fresh water. The ice opened out again; leaving a waterway. The crew saw an iceberg mot far, away, and decided to pull to it and shelter there..

REFUGE ON AN ICEBERG,

The berg was not very high, and they man aged to get on to it, dragging up their two boats along with them...

They turned the boats upside down, and with -the coals they had lighted a fire. The waither- was very severe, snow falling and the tempera ture being bitterly cold. They had biscuits and water, and these were shared out among the unfortunate men, most of whom had given up all hope of rescue.

SAW A JAIL

After being some 28 hours on the iceberg they obsérved a sail in the distance making to- wards them. Raising a. flag on an oar, the sailors made all endeavour to draw the attention of the vessel to their position. · The vessai obe sorved the signals, and born down towardi the Iceberg. When the ship was near the iceberg the shipwrecked crew launched their two boats ́and pulled out to the rescuing craft,

Sha proved to be the Norwegian sealer Gunildi, and the castaways were taken on board and treated with every kindness. The Gunsidi transferred the crew to the Konigs- barg.
