THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH THURSDAY MARCH 28 1907.

THE TRAW TRIAL.

THIRD DAY OF RELENTLESS QUESTIONING,

New York, February 15,** After another spell to-day of relentless, at times almost femcious, cross-examination, Mrs. Evelyn Thaw emerged from the ordeal & trifle paler, but with her original story unicfuted and unimpaired. She stood the incessant fire with perfect serenity of countenance and quite unperturbed.

During the day the judge clearly indicated that he thought Mr. Jerome was travelling be yond legitimate bounds, for he sustained the objections of Mr. Delmas at least a score of times, indeed not a single protest 'of the enas- The German semi-official press declaresel for the defence was overruled.

Delmas, whose intelligence seems scarcely human.

M Dalmas answered like lightning, "The amount of couriery, Mr. Jerome, which some counsel display is almost super-human."

SCENE, BETWEEN COUNSEL

After lunch the excitement became intense when Mr. Jerome attempted to place on the shoulders of Mir, Delmas the responsibility for imponing "a mais of rot ennis into the trial. Mr. Delmas rose, and addressing the Court with a passage of passionate eloquence, made it so abundantly apparent that it was Mr. Jerome who had, in bandling the with exhibited an absolute lack of sensitive impulses and even common decency, that counsel for the prosecution retorted, never a word.

The witness, admitted her friendship with Miss Ethel Barrymore's brother, whereupon Mr. Jerome demanded if she had ever accom panied Mr. Barrymore to see a certain medical specialist in New York when 16. The tone of Counsel's interrogation made everybody realise the character of the insinuation.

CONFRONTED, BUT NOT CONFOUNDED. After receiving an indignant denial, Mr. Jerome dramatically shouted to the count attendant to open the door, to came a bald headed geaileman, who marched straight to within ten feet of the witness' stand.

Did you ever." asked counsel, "consult

this doctor with Mr. Barrymore?”

Mrs. Thaw tuned her big eyes, looked the newcomer up and down, and declared, her scornful voice ringing through the room, "I never saw the man in my life”,

It was again obvious that Mr. Jerome was freely using the facts in the life of witness which had been supplied to him by the girl's

own mother.

Equally astounding was the indication that. Mr. Jerome was largely basing his case upon information given him by Abe Hummel, the New York lawyer, whom Mr. Jerome has him self convicted of blackmail and criminal ir regularities.
