Under the circumstances, large sums ware placed on deposit in banke in the interior, whereas the issue of loans was comparatively Jass, the result, being that a cupri our bank differed in its system from other banking institutions in the interior; and svalling ourselves of the prosperour condition of foreign trade, especially in exports, our Bank devot. d almost its the energy to ex- change, which is the Bank's principal line of business. Thus our Bank witnessed a mont Active sta on in contrast to other institutions.
Turning to the foreign trade of the Empire, we find that Laxports exceeded imports—a fact, never witnessed in recent yey's There favour able conditions were mainly due to the abund ant raiting of agricultural piducts anil to the recovery of all activities to a normal condition from the state of torpor induced by the war. A noteworthy feature was that the trade in raw silk, which now occupies the foremost rank in our foreign commerce, was in an unprecedent- edly prosperous condition from the outset, maintaining the highest quotations known in recent years, En brisk were the transactio that during the rast few months there were ex- ported the greater portion of the output which would be raised during the whole fthe season. The value of the exporis during the above few months showed an increase of over Y32,050,000 1 compared with the corresponding term of the preceding year. The total amount of the experis during last year was over Vito, o0,000, Such a fire showing as the above is a phenome- non rarely witnessed in recent years and is indeed a matter of congratulation for the coun- try's sake.
The exports and imports during the period under review amounted to Y116,900,00 and Y195,700,000 respectively, making a total of ¥443,600.coo. Compared with the car expand- ing period of the preceding 'year there was an increase of over Y68, 00,0.0 in exports includ ing raw silk, kabulae, cation yarn, copper, camphor, porcelain, etc., all of which increased in quantity, while the imports showed n diminution of over Y6,000,000 owing to the fact that d mand for war materials such as iron, leather and the like, slackened, as also did raw cotton, although there was an increste in sugar, kerosene, oil cake, cloth, machinery, elc. The remarkable increase in expons was apparen:ly due to the development of industry and productive enterprises in Japan on the one hand, and to the favourable tone of the econo mlo world of Europa, and America on the olber. The exports and imports of goid and Silver were Y13,3 0,000 and Y5.700,000 respec tively, showing an excess of exports overim- ports by 17,600oo. This was probably duc to the demand for gold ballinn in China and Hongkong for the manufacture of gold leaf or decorative articles and also to a change in the rate of exchange between the East and the West,
Reviewing economic conditions abroad, we find that the commerce and industry of Europe and America have not only been restored to their original condition from the effects of the Russo-Japanese War and the Moroccin ques. tion, but that they show signs of fuither development.
With the development of the Bank's business, it became necessary to increase its funds. In accordance with the resolution recently passed by the load of Directors, the flank notified its shareholders calling for payment of ¥3,000,000, which is the balance of the third jasue of new shares.
