He did not do any particular damage to-day to her original story, flowever, The only fault found with her by critical observers at to-day's session was that A she said "I don't remember," more often than seemed necessary. her memory was clear.

Jerome's object in asking some questions-- those pertaining to how she came to know Marks and Lederer, for instance-was not made plain by the testimony. All the photo- graphs which he produced showed her in cos- tume, either evening dress or kimono, and while there was nothing startling about them, it was supposed that Jerome wanted the jury to see she did not always wear the school-girl attire in which she appeared at the trial,

AIM OF JEROME'S QUESTIONS

One aim of Jerome's evidently was to dis credit her statement that she went to White's studio at the particular time she mentioned.

Mes. Thaw was very nervous while the District Attorney was probing into her past life in an enfriendly way, and when Jerome demanded the letters which she said she received-from- White the prisoner could not restrain himself from blurting out that Stanford White stole them. The defence gave every indication that it was pleased with the introduction of the evidence that she and her mother had received a regular money allowance from White, as this, it was thought, tended to support her story that White encompassed his wish con.. cerning her. The witness admitted that before

AVOIDRO DÉVINITE ANSWER... er, ge District Allorney Jerome brought gut the fact that in 190z, Stanford White deposited $1350 with a New York trustcompany with in.. structions that it should be pad 10 Evelyn Nesbit at the rate of $15 per week. Mrs Thẩw frankly admitted receiving a number of checks from the trust Company, but she would no admit that there was a provision that the should receive the money only when out of employment. The prosecutor spent nearly the entire afternoon in trying to make Mrs. Thaw admit that this was true, but as ollen end in as many words as he put the question to her she gave the one answer: "I don't remember.",

Mrs. Thaw's inability to remember a number of other things about which Jerome questioned her was by far the most material element in the cross-examination. The District Attorney delved into her past life with a famil'arity as to delails and a store of general knowledge which, at times seemed to amare all who heard, not excepting the defendant's counsel themselves.

Mr. Thaw seemed perfecily self-possessed al every slage of the cross-examination. At times her voice trembled, but almost always.it was clear and emphatic. She fenced with the pro- secutor continually, corrected him at times to assumptions drawn from previous answers and occasionally, told him his questions were entirely too long to permit of a proper answer. The young woman seemed to be swayed by the District Attomey's mond. When his voice was soft and perhaps insinuating, she ariseared in the same low tone.' 'When Jerome would be. con a-aroused and snap questions at her in a loud voice, she replied in kind. When the prosecutor would persist with a question she had answered two or three times, Min. Thaw would finally reply with an emphasis on each word, spacing slowly, distinctly and defamily, The defendant was'always'ulert to catch every word. Ha seemed impatient at the nature of 'some of the questions put by the prosecutor, and kept up a returning fire of whispered com ment with his attorneys.
