Bangkok 23rd Feb. Gen.-N. Y. K. Druingeith, Br. 1.4, 2,473, J. Fairweather, 28th Feby Cardiff 12th Jang Cosle-Admiralty. Empress of Japan, Br. s 3,039, Henyr CH Pybut, R..R, 13th Feb., Vancouver 25th Jan, and Shanghai 11th Feb., Mails and Gen.-C. P. R. Co.

Sydney, 20th January, The residents of Baseman's Bay, on the South Coast, have bad the unique experience of indulging in a hunt after unusually big game, 'Eroni's Circus was in the township on Friday night, and the audience, which, for tuostely perhaps was the crowded, were treat ed to a sensational item not included in the regular performance. One of the principal attrections was a wild beast sci, and whilan performer was taking a ladder into a cage con.Haitan, Br.s., 1,183, 1. S. to making their escape. The ladder was to have been used for some part of the perform sace. The moment the door was opened one of the lions mondo a grab at the trainer from bebind the door, which had not been secured, and the man, in an endeavour to save himself from the clutches of the lion, fell against the door, which swung open. A pazic had already seized upon the onlookers, and this was intensified" as two of the beasts - lion and lioness-sprang through the door. Before the three others had time to follow, the attendants had shut and fastened the door. The spectators made for the exit of the tent, and the greatest excitement prevailed. The circus employees surrounded and captur ed the lion, which did not give his captors much trouble, and he was speedily behind the Iron bars again. The lioness was quicker to act, and even before all the spectators had time to hurry from the tent, she rushed through the door.

An organised hunt in which many joined took place all through the night, and next morning the lioness was first sighted by the search party near the Illawarra. Company's store, and was fired at by T. Maloney from a distance of 30 yards. The shot apparently missed, for she bounded off Shortly after- wards a shot was fired at her by one of the circus employees from a shorter distance, and was also without result. T. Maloney, was subsequently more fortunate in his aim, and to him belongs the rare distinction of having bagged a lion in Australia. The lioness was sean by the party on Mr. Picket's selection. about a mile from the township. She had seized scow, which she was holding down, The horses, ridden by the party gave warning of the presence of the lioness, and the hunters were able to approach fairly near to her. A .black employee of the circus fired and wound. ed the beast. She abandoned her prey and, retreating, about 200 yards from the party, lay down. A. Velich and T. Maloney then fired. The lioness, apparently badly wounded, jump, ed-fully soft, into the air, but settled down again, They fired again, and the charged straight at them like flash Veitch and Maloney dodged Her round a large oak tree, and Mr. Eroni, of the circus, called on them to fire again. This Veitch attempted to do but the lioness seized him by the arm and swung him round men in the excitement had dropped their rifles. The lioness then retired about 20 yards. Veitch and Maloney regained their rifles, and as the wounded beast mide a last spasmodic' rush Maloney placed a bullet just over her left eye, and she rolled over dead. Mr Froni placed a ̧‚value of £250 on the lioness.
