tinguished lawyer, and, it may be remembered, wat for the American side on” the Alaskan tribunal held over here at the Foreign Office.

A "STRAIGHT" MAN.

Of evidence for and against the prisoner. there will, of course, be plenty that must not be trusted. Fortunately for him, Mr. William' Travers Jerome is the district attorney, who acts as Public Prosecutor. I say "fortunately," for Mr. Jerome is one of the straightest men io America. He is the bete noire of Tammany

and the terror of the gambler. He has many enamiar, but even they acknowledge that he is * man of honour; and Mr. Thaw and his friends know that in conducting his casa for the prosecution Mr. Jerome will be beyond suspicion, and will allow no evidence which be believes to come from donbtful sources.

MARIE CORRELLI ON WOMAN

SUBFRAGE,

"Why? Because, frankly and honestly, I do not want it. Again why? Because, to my "mind, the very desirei fir a vote on 'the pari of woman is an open confciilon of weakness-a proof that she has lost ground and is not sure of herself. For if she is a real woman-if she

has the natural, heritage of her sex, which is the mystic power to persuade, enthral and sub- jegate man she has no need to come down from her throne and mingle in 'any of his poli-. ∙tical ways, inasmuch as she is already the

head and front of government,"

Aho thus enlarges on man's dependence on women:

"Lei those who will laugh at or sneer down the statement, the fact remains that a man is seldom anything more than a woman's repre- sentative. No inan, in either business or plea- Kurs, can ever quite shake off the influence of the woman with whom he is most privately and intimately connected. Good or bad, she colora his life. It is always a case of cherchez la fem me. Seck and you will find. Behind a sloven- ly workman there is generally-a-sluttish-wife. Behind the obstinate and stupid man, behind the timorous and time-serving man, behind the hasty politician who insults his Prime Minister, will be found in' their several turns, the com monplace woman, the bypocritical woman and the disappointed, egotistical, vain woman.

|

"Maois, what woman makes him. She bears him and rears him. She is his sovereign and supreme ruler. From the first breath he draws she, and she alone, possesses him. When he is born he at once displays that fractious“ and fickle disposition which is so often significant of his future development; and woman has to carry him up and down in her arms, talking nonsense to him, or, as it is called, baby language? She knows she has to begle that way because he would not under. stand sense,"

Men, we are told, laugh at women's altempt ed intellectualism. They call a clever writer,

She exclaims:

But who is to blame for this erroneous im pression so widely prevalent anong men?

Why, the women iba selver, of course, al only because they show the most cruel and acrimoniam spite' and jealousy when one of their sex becomes distinguished in art-or letters, but because they are the first to start unkind reports about her and against her against her looks, her dress, her manner and even her reputation. There is na length, to which women's tongues will not run when 'downing' other women more brilliant than themselves. They allow men to see this paltry display of their inferior character every day, and naturally the men draw their own conclu sions. The youngest schoolboy is too often compelled to notice and inwardly comment "pon his mother's love of leaștable`scandal or his sister's pillous envy of some other prettier

girl,

"If such are the early impressions made by the conduct of his own women relatives on a youth's mind, he will, most unquestionably, when he grows to manhood, retain the one 'fixed idea of woman's generally inherent foolishness, while the talk of women's in terests will only 'mave him to a skeptical amile,"

She concludes by giving women a recipe for triumphing in the war between the sexer" Thus:

41

"Taking'a broad survey of the contest, it is

It

evident'that man's war with woman will never end till she herself learns how to conquer him. She can do it so easily if she only will.. needs no violence-ne wordy discussión, Part of his battle against her to-day is an instinctive desire to protect her against herself to try and prevent her from losing all that lovely reverence, tenderness and delicacy which in Jong aga old postic days made him lift her to the altitude of an angel and guardian' goddèss of his life. For in his heart he would like to be able to say of her as Panuccio dal Bagoo of Pisa wrote of his lady:-

Jam sil rapturos

'Since thus my will waiset,

To serve, then lower of Joy; tkfas excellence, Norever that anything could rosia

A pain or regret,

Dui on the dwills my every thought and venSE Į Considering that from then all vietas spread,,

As from a fountain-head,

That is thy gift ie wiadom's liest avail"

And honour without fall

"In these lines may be found an epitome al the women's rights, which, if faithfully ad hered to, should govern the world. It is better to be a Cleopatra than 'suffragette, even if Antony must lois Actiam. And if woman would impress man with an abiding sense of hey moral and mental power, and with the parity of her lotellectual influence upon the history of the time, she must begin to teach -him in the nursery and schoolroom, (not at the polling booth,"-Masis Corelil jo The Rapid.
