required for daily use, very little or nothing of buying and selling is done for the first few days, because every one is feasting and resting 1 All this seems peculiar to the Western mind, and, indeed, is to every one coming straight from home,;, but one, noon gets to regard the Chinese New Year as the great "lazy occasion of the year

The adults of many families are not sup posed to retire for rest on the first night: ia not every Chinaman with the name, expected to carry out to the letter those sacred here- ditary rites of his forefathers 7. Many go through the ceremony of washing and ablution in warm water, in which are steeped the Aromatic leaves of the pumelo, or the "huang ph" (Buccaurra ·metleyaṇa),‚a' common fruit tree, known in Malay as pokok buah rambai." The idea is to wash off all the bad luck of the Old Year and prepare for a new lease of life, After prostrations have been ade before the altar, and heaps of sacrificial papers burnt as an expression of obligation to heaven, and earth for giving him protection and success in life, at dawn of day, if he is not playing at "fan-t'an" or "vingt-et-up," or sipping his cup of wine, the Chinaman dons his best clothes. With a packet of red coloured visit- ing cards (cut oblong and 6 in. by 4 in.; in size), on wi ich lik name and patronymic are writ ten or printed in large characters, he salien forth, accompanied by his children, if blessed with any, to pay his respects to his relatives and friends, leaving one of the male members at home to receive any expected callers. This called al-Jia" (which really means only new calls), and such calls have to be recipro cales, according to custam. Among the Jical Chinese, pink cards, printed with "pantuns," are left at the houses of friends. Here is a sample of the ' pantuns":

Rintang timor tergulong. Rumpot tekil di-tengah hutan. Minta umer saltinggi gunong,

fotak jerki'sebesar lautan. "Klong-her, kinog-heel" (Congratulations, congratulations) is the first greeting of a Chinamen, and the host brings forth hot tea and sweetmeats; then the female member of the house offer the children their little pra sot, which are always accompanied by a itle red packet containing a piece of sliver and a copper cash, this being kept through, Staff Sergt.
