and others of quite recent establiþment, their. reports, nevertheless, will agree generally on several points. They will tell the' palpablo,] facts of diligence and enthusiasm, which cobstitute, according to western notions, almost precocity on the part of the scholars and will add the consequent, though party counter-acting, fact that there is always the posibility that students will lay down their 'studies exactly at the critical moment, and from pique or the irresistible allurement of attrac tive employment or merely from whim or vanity interrupt, even if they do not put a définite' period to, endeavours, which might have bome fruit. There will be thus a blending of en- couragement' with disappointment, such as is Inevitable in almost every enterprise; but as those directly concerned in the management of the institutions, will almost certainly express satisfaction rather than the reverse, it might be considered that for the outside public there is nothing left but to applaud.

The circumstance, however, that a consider able section, of Young China is either passing through, or clamouring to enter, these foreign. directed schools, which are to be found in all the greater cities of the Empire, raises an faevitable question as to the influence the education there imparted will have upon the future of the nation. A very great responsibility, which we are sure is fully appreciated by those concerned, rests upon the instructors in Anglo-Fr, for Saigon. Chinese schools and colleges. The educational problem is complicated for China by the desire that the student's attain. ment shall have an 'immediately, practical result, apart from the drilling of the inental faculties in the way that muscles are strengthen ed by gymnastics. The English language, we fancy, is mudied because it is the chief medium of speech with the outer world and has a com mercial value, rather than because it enshrines a great and elevating literature. In 'mediæval' Europe Latin and fierk were sentinels to the learned professions, certainly, but had no further extrinsic value.' I atin was the lingua franca of culture not of business, and it is on intellectual culture that the greatness of the western nations has been made firm., Hygienics, sani. tation, bridge-building, all the mechanical marvels of the nineteenth century were possible because the way had been, pre pared for them, among a people whose industrial and civic leaders had been bred to the classics. China herself in the monumental solidarity of her history as a pation, exemplifies the strength of simple. scholarship. rank, and its scope has been limited accord- ingly. It will achieve no useful object to sub. itute for this luterested delving in dry-as-due Chinese lore, a parrot-like acquaintance with Shakespeare. But if our Anglo-Chinese col- leges give the incentive to a desire for learning for learning's sake and ant for any mere sel fith purpose, they will take high, place among the regenerating forces at work in the Empire. For they will have helped to produce a body of thinkers, who will lead the nation to action ---N. C. D.News.
