INSURANCH AMALGAMATION."||

A proposal is now before the shareholders of the Accident to transfer their assets and liabili.

ties to the Commercial Union, and should the transfer be affected policy holders in the former Institution will doubtless realise and appreciate the great improvement in their security as com pared, with the Accident, capital of £50,000 only,

Insurance trading nowadays saims to be a very precarious affair for shareholders, and the Accident loss and expense ratio from 1901 to 1904 has been respectively 90.2, 100.6, 109,6 and 98.7 per cent... The public mind has a tendency to regard Insurance Companies from a some- what inaccurata point of view, and to look upon the enormous reserves accumulated by such Companies as the Commercial Union as so much money made out of the community; but money doubtless makes money, and it is the very possession of these reserves which onables insurance to be done at practice ally cost price, a fact which seems to secure an unanswerable argument in the number of fiquidations which take place among the small- er companies.

The following paragraph appears is a Home exchange:→

+

The process of amalgamation still proceeds apace in the insurance world. Negotiations are in progress for an early amalgamation of

the Union Assurance Society with the - Com

mercial Union. There is always the possibility in these cases of failure of agreement, and therefore this new relation of the two com panies cannot yet be treated as an. established fact. On the other hand, it is believed that the proposals made by the Commercial' Union àre such as may well appeal to the shareholders of the Union,
