Farther detalla concerning the expedition is Tibet of the Austrian explorer, Dr. Erich Zug. mayer, whose, return to Lab in 'Kashmir a faw week ago was announced, have been received by Reuters

The climatic and other difficulties met with “by the expedition, were very grant.

Travelling towards the eart and south east, ↑ Dr. Zugmayer traversed an entirely unknown region, marching for two whole months at an altitude of over 15,600 ft.

Heavy losses, however, occurred among the transport animals owing to the terribin prive tions and intense severity of the weather ox-, perienced in the passes. In some it was (m- possible to make any progress at all. Eventuai- ly, at an altitude of nearly 20,000 ft, surrounded. by ice-filled gorges and amidst frequent snow- storms, the expedition was obliged to camp and consider an alteration of its route.

The great mortality among the transport animals reduced the caravan to an alarming exiani, and the Austrian explorer was compell-

The expedition marched past Rudok and the Panggong Lakes, through, unknown country, and eventually crossed the frontier passes into Kashmir. On his arrival at Leh Dr. Zugmayer had only 13 transport animals left, all the --others having fallen victims to exhaustion and climate. The members of the expedition, how- ever, were in the best of health.

GOOD SCIENTIFIC RESULTS.

Dr. Zugmayor expresses himself as highly satisfied with the scientificresults of his journey. Next to the exploration of unknown lands, a collection of data for the correction of existing maps appears to him to be particularly import. ant, and he severely condemns what he characterises as "the misleading levity" with which geographical details are often treated by cartographers.

Of great importance geologically is the fact ascertained beyond all doubt of the existence. of recent volcanic conformations in Tibet, a well-known controversial point. The botanical

specimear gathered at an altitude of sixteen to twenty thousand foot are also, a feature of great interest.

Especially notable, however, are the zoola.

gical results, included among the specimens being so new species and so now groups of small animals.
