ROUND THE STONKS AT CHRISIMAS,

In spite of hard times, a glinor round the stores of Hongkong, decorated for the coming Christmas season, shows that the caterers of things seasonable are not, in their efforts to please the taste and fancy of the public, one whit behin the Landard of excellence of former years; in fact, if anything, the various display everywhere afford evidence of novelty and ingenuity, which are only equalled by the cheap costs, which as the result of depreciated. sterling has enabled our purveyors to lay down and sell, their goods this year cheaper than

Russia and Japan. The Russian newspapers are adopting an alarmist tone respecting the Russo-Japanese negotiations, some of them even demanding war, rather than yield to the Japanese de mands regarding the fisheries and coasting rights.

It is not believed, however, that there is anything in dispute which cannot be solved by negotiation or arbitration.

PRINCE FUSHIMP'S VISIT TO ENGLAND.

TO TRAVEL BY A P. AND O. STEAMER

It is stated that the programme of the journey of General Prince Fushimi, who has been ap pointed to visit England to return the courtesy of the Carter Mission of Prince Arthur of Connaught, has been altered. The British Government has expressed a wish to place a British vessel at the disposal of the Ambassa .dor, Prince Fushimi, who intend to leave Yokohama on the 2nd of February via Canada, has postponed his departure and has nerepted the offer of the British authorities. A P. and O., steamer will be especially sent out from London to convey the Prince to England via Suez, and it is expected in arrive at Yokohama on or about February 15th.

THE COXSWAIN'S BRAVADO.

A CHALLENGE TO THE WATER POLICE.

A very interesting case was heard at the Police Court, this morning, when the coxswain of a steam launch declared that no police Jaunch in Hongkong could leave his lunch behind if he wanted to let her go,

The case was that in which P.C. Berrie, of the Water Police, summoned the master of the steam launch Hwangtung before Mr. F. A. Hazeland, for failing to stop when called upon by the police,

had ar ́an cost which in Kerling represents something little over £5000 - 4

To people not so well oudowed with this world's goods, the Hanke Baby Grand, which it to be bad si a cost much below that of its more celebrated Steinway sister, and whleb, is guaranteed to stand perfectly the trying climate this Colony, recommends"ils 1!" as a more reasonable substitate. Musicians of every grade and class will find, at reasonable cost, some instrument to suit their individus. Laste and purchasing power, while for the unskilled in the art of music there lies powerful consciation in the "Talking Machine, that famous phonograph which is one of Messrs. Robinson's special lines, which works without friction or vibration, and causes ita records—of which this house has a repertoire of several well-selected hundreds-la tender up their burden of music, both vocal and instrumental, and of dialogues, clearly and purely, and with the least sense of mechanical assistance.

"In conclusion, those interested in music and things musical should not let the festive season go by without looking in at Mosse, Robinson's.

MRSERS, CALDBECK, MACOR GØR & CO. It would be a case" Lf painting the rose to describe all the excellencies of the splendid range of winer, spirits and liqueurs of all sorts with which this old established house has plenished its cellars, to meet the calls of the enming festive season. Of liqueur randies there is a choice to please the taste of the most critical gourmet, since Messrs.

No more sensible present could be made to the youth able to take care of it, than a photo-camera such as those of which Messrs.
