PROSPERITY OF BUSINESS.
INCREASE OF FOREIGN INVESTORS, During 1904 and 1905, while the war was in prograss, the business of the Yokohama Dock Company was adversely affected owing to the fact that the ships chartered by the Govern district. During the second half of 1904 daly eleven Japanese and thirty-two foreign varale were docked, the majority of the latter being those which were chartered for the coasting trade. With the assurance of peace, during second half of 2905, matters began to im- prove, and for the first six months of the current year a very satisfactory result was ob tained. During the period 70, ships, with a letal tonnage of 139,856, were docked, against 46 ships, 138,202 tons, in the corresponding period of last year. Canton, 13th December. H.E. Chow Fu has been a close reader of the vernacular papers published in Southern China and. Hongkong, ever since he arrived in Canton. His studies of the contents of Hong- kong vernacular papers have now led H.E. to prohibit their importation into Canton, as he finds that some of the latter are writing in very strong terms against the Cantonese Govern. ment. With this end in view .E. Chow Fu has sent despatches to the Postal Commissionering figures- and the Commissioner of Customs at Canton in which H.E stated that he thought it would be better to stop their admission into Canton, and H.E, requested those officials to keep a very sharp lookout against their entry. H.E. fur. thermors said than anyone bringing the pro- scribed papers into Canton through the private other firms, should be arrested and heavily fiped. If the persons ta fixed were unable or unwilling to pay the fines imposed they must be imprisoned as an alternative. H.E. Chow Fu urgently asked the Commissioners mention ed to co-operate with him in stopping the im portation of the forbidden journali.
