KAIN MAKBS DESEKZ S.

Paul Combes shows in the Paris Cormos that the earth's real deserts are made by rain, rather than the lack of it, or rather, by the combination of abundant rais with eland surface incapable of holding moisture long anough to give plant-life a chance.

The Sabata of Africa, the Bad Lands of our Western territories and the Arabian and Central Aslan déserts are by no means destitute of life. They have their fauna and flors, loss numerous and, less varied shan those of bumid regions, and peculiarly adapted to their en vironment, but they are rarely or never destitute of some kind of life for any con ider. able area.

The real deseria are found where the rains are heavy, and where the earth'surface is of such character that the water at once suns sway and the temperatura'speedily evaporates what little moisture the surface may retain, Buch spots are really destitute of life.

The real deatris may be found on a small

scale in most countries. Mr. Combes cites ond to the hills of French Savoy-the gorge whence issues the torrent of St. Julian. The rainfall of that region is, heavy a certain easons, but the bare rocks and clays of the surface are incapable, under a southern suo, of holding water long enough for anything to grow, or else the plants that start are scoured away by the driving rains. There are many other such spots among the denuded hills of Spain.

The largest well-known rain-piade desert is, however, the clay bills of the Mekran district of Persia. They are cut and scoured by torren- tial rains, and they are lifelere, as the arid deserts are not. How they reached their pres- ent state is unknown. A long ago as the time of Alexander the Great they were describ- ed as "a vast graveyard, without the trace of a giving thing. If may be reasonably conjec tured, huweyes, that the Meuran desert in to some extent, man-made as well as rain-made- that man helped it to become a region where rains have become a sterilizer instead of a fertilizer,

This conjecture seems reasonable, because similar conditions are reported as beginning to appear in certain hill districts of Westera Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio. The forest growth which originally covered them has been cut off and burned off so recklessly that, though raios are abundant, all vegetation is disappear. ing from them. The rains that fall upon them race away to the adjacent river valleys, carrying with their torrent the minute plants and 'low, forms of animal life which create the soil in which other forms would grow, and leave no thing but the bare and sterile earth-San Francisco Chronicle.
