The hospital is in course of constriction, but fünds have dwindled away and it is found ne cessary to appeal to the generosity of the pub Hic as buyers at the binar. Tremendous as this seems, it falls far below the estimate placed upon it by a member of the Royal Society of Engineers of Great Britain. Striking this mountain a few years ago in one of his prospects, he figured that it had enough, of the ore to supply the world for almost a hundred years. So the estimate now placed upon it appears conservative in comparison. Incidentally it may be mentioned that the Briush engineer tried to secure a concession to

Do. He was, however, under the work the mountain but failed. It was too good

a thing to part with, supervision of the manager, and not working independent of the manager. Sometimes the manager would not allow the compradore to advance money to a particular Chinese cus- tomer beyond a certain limit, and the compar- dore would have to obey that order. The man, ager would not consult the compradore on the credit of Chinese customers, but would in the ordinary course inquire for their references. The compardore was held responsible for any loss resulting from advances made by him, even when acting within the limits of the manager's order. The compradore would be at liberty to

According to the important in this case was the authority of the witnesses just called, the duties and power of a bank compradore and a compradore in a com- mercial firm were quite different. The Pro- curator suggested that the manager and te compradore of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, or of the international Bank, be called to give further evidence on this point. The Pro. curator further applied to call the sub-manager

of the Chartered Bank to ascertain the date on

which the business with the Chinese firm Bie Tong (referred to at the last bearing) had been suspended. The sub-manager should be re- guested to bring with him the book with the entries of the purchase of bills for the 38th fiscal year. The Procurator further applied to obtain the record of the bailiff, who was stated to have visited the office of Sie Tong in Octo ber, 1905, for the attachment of the property, and found nothing to attach.

Mr. Ota, who endorsed the application of Procurator, applied that the manager and com- pradore of both the banks be called, and also a Chloese in Kobe.
