THE CONTRACT SECURED BY MESSRS,
„NOWARTH" ERSKINE & CO.
On Saturday wa (Straits Times) lännensced that Mesars. Howarth, Erskine and Company, of Singapore, had been ordered by the Shang hai Municipal Council to erect two new steal y bridges at Shanghai at a cost of two hundred. and twenty thousand dollars. The Shanghai Municipality have decided to do away with tha old and insecure wooden structures known as the Garden and Chekiang bridges and replace. them with new steel structures de port
The bow Garden bridge will be a massive
Structure of an ornamental design is keeping with the artistic surroundings of the Bund and will, when completed, consint of two spans of over one hundred and seventy feet each, with a main roadway of forty feat width along each side and a' footway of ten feet width. Provision is made to run double line of tram cars, in the centre of the main roadway, while the entire road surface will be paved with hardwood blocks. There will be over eight hundred and sixty toos of steelwork in this bridge before it is com plated.
The Cheklang bridge is of the lenticular, girder type, and is to have a span of ons hundred and, ninety-six feet. It is also of massive construction to take the load of run- ning tram cars as well as the pedestrian and heavy street traffic. The weight of the steelwork in this bridge will be over three hundred and sixty tons. A feature in the erection of these bridges will be the method adopted in carrying on uninterruptedly the existing road and water borns traffic, and this will be no small task when one con siders the amounts there really are at these paints.
We congratulate Messrs. Bowarth, Erskine, Limited, os having obtained "this contract in open competition with the loading firms, and we wish them every success in its accomplish
ment.

itself to be covered by Roglish enterprise, The margin has been twice reduced in the in.. tervening years-on the first occasion by the Duke of the Abruzzi's expedition, and on the second (that which is reported to-day) through, the indomitable persistence of Commander Peary. That gallant American sailor has crown ed his filth expedition into the unknown by reaching à latituda of 87 dig, 6 mín, N. or.. within 203 miles of the spot which eye bath Bot seen but towards which boman wonder staat=" chet with an indefatigable yearning, Com mander Peary's success (for in this con nection success is still expressed in degrees,: of failure) has filled his countrymen with in very, "excusable gratiscation... The Arctic "record" (pity that so debased a word should' have to be applied to a noble enterprise)) has been achieved by "an American explorer, an American vessel, and an American rotik and Englishmen will add their congratulatibo all the more. cordially with the knowledge) that the captain of the good ship Roosevelt chose to man her with a Newfoundland, crew. 'The journey has produced additions to the lors" of geography of which, only a vague impres sion is yet conveyed by the ‘brief, telegraphic reports of its experience. Land. boundaries: have apparently been discovered which will | set the map-makers to work again, and on the recondite subject of ocean currents Comman der Peary will have further addition to make to that important body of facts which was brought home by Dr. Nansen. The steady progress of the art of exploration is shown by the successful provision against contingencies", Through which the leader of this latest venture has been able to return with the whole inem Bership of his expedition safe and sound. Violent gates" interfered with certain of its plans, and one of the supporting partics-was' rescued only when it had reached the confines of starvation. But Peasy, le Nansen, has avoided paying the tribute of life either to disease or hardship, and has thus done much- to weaken the objections which Philistine philosophy is too prone to urge, against the prosecution of Arctic adventure.
The new "record"-holder of the Far North will have something to say, doubtless, on the ponsibilities of ultimately reaching the Poleas they seem to be affected by his own exploit./ That the boundaries of the "ondiscoveredi country" have been pushed backwards by near-e ly sixty miles in ten years encourages, forther persistence in the dream of a century. On the othes band the obstacles to sledge-travel for more than a certain distance from their base”! FIFRESSES of which both Peary and Nanson bavo gained sucli full experience, inspire obvious doubts ás to the remaining two hundred miles, being within the compass of possibility. Speculation plan, and it is noteworthy that the tragedy of - may turn again towards the balloon or aimbip
Andre's fate has not prevented other projects of a similar kind from being pressed forward.
