The following detailed account of the mur. der of Harry I. Pleas is taken from the Chin Times,

Further details as to the murder of Mr. Pless at Peking on Saturday night point to revenge on the part a Chinese as the motive of the crime.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH FRIDAY NOVEMBER 16,

DETAILS OF THE MUNDER O Stuart, Herschell, Ramsay, McKay, Dr. Inni a Thacker, Mrs. Forbes, infant and amah, Miss HARRY J. PLESS.

S Caborne, Mrs. J. W. Stephens, Mr. P. C. Potts, Mr. and Mrs, Hellis and infant, Mrs. Bunbury and child, and Miss Steel. From Marseilles--Rev. and Mrs. Walsh and 2 Infants, Sir H. T. Sykes, Madam Litchterrelbe, v let and maid, Messrs. Morris and A Buyers, For Shanghai from London-Mines A. B. Wells. Mis. Vole, and schi, M., R. Walmesley, Onellodey, R. Hudson, Mr. and And C Hati Mrs, G. J. M. Shru, ad Misc Hamilton. From arseilles Messrs, G. ·P. Griffin and Heill. For Yokohama from 1 ondor -Rev. and Mr. Steel, and Her, P. Cambridge. From Marseilles-Miss C. and Mrs. Murray. and H. W. Hancock, From Brindisi--Mr. H. Hawkins. For Manila-Mrs. Kenney. For Shangbai-Mr. Jendus. For Hongkong-Mr. J. P. Alexander.

Mr. Fless lived in a Chinese house, his own property, at Peking, and look his meals at the Hotel du Nord. He went to

the hotel on Saturday night as usual, and after dinner a card party was arranged. Mr.:Pless was play- ing when his own servant canie in and said that he was wanted at a house a little distance away, where some one was waiting for him He accordingly excuied himself, stating that ho would be back to rejoin his friends alter fittle while.

About 945 a Chiese policeman arrived at the hotel and stated than a foreigner bad- beer. shot. The policeman did not know who he was. The card-players went out to the place Indicated, and there found Dr. Ieck, of Tien- tin, who is staying at Mr. Wu Jim Pah's house in Peking. Dr. Teck was attending to a body Jying on she ground, which they saw at once to be the body of Pleas. No one sise was in sight, and all the houses in the neighbourhood were closed, the inhabitants having been scared by the report of fire-arms and being unwilling. to run any risk of compromising themselves,

Dr. Feck on examination of the body found that itle was extinct. Death appeared to have been immediate. Two shots had been fired, one penetrating the jaw and passing out at the temple, while the other was embedded. The face was partly blackered with powder, in- dicating that the shats were fired within a few inches of the head.

The British consular officer at the Legation, Mr. Kirk, was informed, and took charge of the body. All the servants of the deceased were arrested and are kept in custody,

*

Suspicion does not fest, however, on the ser vants, but on a Chinese coolie who was employ ed at a house in the neighoushont accupied by women of il' repute. "here had been some trouble between the deceased and this man, and Pless had whipped the conlie, who lodged a complaint at the British consolar office: Mr Kirk had sent for less and told him he had advised the Chinese that Pless could be sued for assault. Pless said he was willing to pay a fine if ordered to do so, but he did not, think <himself at fault.
