DEATH OF MR. W. E. CRAIG,
CORONER'S INQUIRY.
At the Magieracy, this forenoon, Mr. F. A. Hazeland presiding as Coroner, an inquiry was beld' into the circumstances touching the death of William Eric Craig, thirty years of age. whole death occurred on the sth instant, at his residence, "Westley," Babington Path, under circumstances pointing to suicide.
The following jury was empanelled:-Messrs. W. Evans, F. Austin and P. Buckle.

To the Editor of The Hongkong Telegrang" Sir,-None need help more! Diseased, maimed, outcasts from society, pear and clothed, surely they appeal to all who have in them the "milk of human kindness." Even in the kindlier warmth of summer their sufferings are keen and many die for lack of the neres sary sustenance to hold body and soul together. But now that the wind blows chils from the direction of the White Cloud Hills and the better-off Chinese appear in their cotton-wadded garments the state of the poor lepers is wretch ed and pitiable in the extreme. During the last few years Dr. A. Beattie has done much in relieve this, suffering and brighten the lot of the loper through a systematic distribution of rice and old clothes during the winter months. This he has been enabled to do through the benevolent help of friends in Hongkong and
FIRE IN HOLLYWOOD ROAD,
TWO PERSONS KILLED
At about noon today a fire broke out on the first door of No. 35, Hollywood Road and did -considerable damage. The first indication' si a fire was seen by two policemen in that beat, who gave an alarin by sounding their whistles. Sanitary Inspector Fisher, who heard the naise, rushed eat from the District Sanitary Office and seeing what was happening reported the matter to the inspector in charge at the Central Police Station. By the time the brigade got on the scene a large crowd who were attracted by the denke smoke were ou the pot, and the police had no end of trouble dearing the mob from surging too near the bung building. The fire spread rapidly. Staring at house No. 35 the fames spread to the two adjoining buildings. Nos. 33 and 37 and gradually worked their way to the top of the houses. The ground flours of the three anuses were used as shops, and the upper stories as dwelling houses, one of the flats being occupied by a llebrew family.
Two boatsfeft, who were standing gear by, the aurated Clubman as he was sprung getting up again to make for Mr. Botelho, and scutite intowed, during which hota kolmen were stabbel, it was said, in the night breast. Finding that he had squelched the fighting ardour of his two assailants and that Mr. Botelho had cleared, the Chinaman utade a rush to 'get out of the building. At the door he was thet by a hard heatman, who tried to stop him, but the Cajnaman yọt out, as running in the direc tion of the stone pier in front of the office, juin- ed into the sea.
By this time the news had spread through the departments and exegement prevailed.
The pan people did all they could to drag the man of the water, but the Chin avn fought and got free on every eccasion. Canton, stb November, Taotai Li King Chon has been ordered to proceed to Carion to take charge of the mint. As soon as he arriv s there, the dircula- tion of provincial coinage will be suppressed and Fai Ching" "coins only will be issued in the two Kwang, It is considered that the latter currency will be found much more con. venient then the former.
Kiang Nam has already adopted the new currency since the end of last month.

A certain wealthy gentleman of Canton has consulted with Mr. Lo Po Shun, a member of the committee of the Yuel-han Railway Co., with the view of establishing a banking cor paration in connection with the railway com pany with a capital of $4,000,000. This gen. Beman volunteers to subscribe half of the rapital, if the company subscribe the other half. A meeting of the company will be called in a few day's lime, to consider the maiter.

Yesterday a telegram was received at the Viceroy's yanien from Li Ping Shi, weiyuan of The Kiangnan Asenal, stating that the works have shipped via Shanghai, for the Canton Water Works, 600 tons of iron water pipei, and, requesting the Jural authorities to apply to the Shanghai Canton authenties for a buchan" (pass) covering the said goods. Yesterday afternoon the local authorities, telegraphed to Shanghi applying for the issue of a "huchnu."

In my last report I stated that the Prefect of Kwongchow, Chan Mang Chung, is likely to be selertid to fill the vacancy in the directorate of the Cofernment Cement Works, but it has, now been ascertaines that the Viceroy' bas! ordered the Provincial Treasurer to take over the directorship and control of the works, with the assistance of Prefect Chan as sub-director. In his despatch to the Provincial Treasurer, H.E the Viceroy exhorted the former official i to forward the movement of opening up new industrial establishments under the control of the Government and the people, as it will be to the great benefit of the country.
