THE case against the accountant, who was charged with stealing a bank deposit note far $4,000, under circumstances already given in these columns, came to a conclusion at the Police Court on Saturday last. The defendant was found guilty and sentenced to four months' imprisonment with hard labour. Detective sergeant Martin Earner protecuted, and Mr. H.J. Gardiner, of Mr. O. D. Thomsons office, defended.
Ir any sign were wanting of the approach of what we call the winter season in this Colony, it is surely to be found in an observance of the edergetic manner in which coolies are every where engaged hauling down, and parking in their swaddling clothes, the punkahs, which have been so accessary and welcome for the last six months, and which, like the dormouse, will now bybornate, until the advent of the next hot season calls for their resuscitation.
THE Viceroy-designate of the Mini-Ché pro vinces, it is reported from Peking, is to be given some equivalent appointment in the capital instead of going to Foochow to take over his Dow post. This is said to be the result of his Excellency's unpopularity in the provinces and especially in Fukien, whose gentry, and mer. chants it may be remembered sent a petition to Poking protesting against his Excellency's appointment over them on the ground that his Excellency did not suit conditions" in the Min-Ché viceroyalty.
"YES," said a witness in a case in the Summary Court before His Honour Mr. A. G. Wise, Puisne. Judge, "I know the defendant. My firm had many transactions with him. Former ly he bought goods and always paid cash for them; afterwards he adopted the credit system, and then he didn't pay." Then, why did your firm continue to supply him with gonds?" asked, his Honour. "Because another man promised to pay for all gands purchased by defendant." 'said the witness. "A very comfortable arrange- men! for the plaintiff," rėmarked his Honour, if it had been carried out, but unfortunately for him it wasn', hence these proceedings." -
A COOLIE by name Kwok Yeung, who gave the police to understand that he lived at No. 11, Tai Wo Street, Wanchai, walked into the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company's premises, at North Point, on Tuesday afternoon, annexed four dollars' worth of copper, and got arrested He came before M, F. A Hazeland, at the Police Court an Westnesday, and was sentenced to three weeks' hard labour and three hours' stocks. This makes the second attempt dur- ing the last two days of coolies trying to separate the Company from its copper," said an officer, and it would not surprise me at all to hear that the next coolie is charged with attempting to steal one of the oil tanks!"
Max Cho, a coolie, no address, was probably longing for a taste of gaol life when he did what he did on Sunday. Walking up to 1 cigarette shop at No. 2, Morrison Street. West Point, Mak picked up a small glass case, con- taining some sevenly odd packets al cigarettes, is front of a crowd of people, put it on his shoulder, and proceeded to walk oil. The shopkeeper vaulted the counter in good style, and seized Mak, who was in no hurry to get away, some yards away from the shop. He came before Mr. H. H. ). Gompertz, on Mun
day, at the Police Court, and pleaded guilty with a triumphant smile on his countenance. Three weeks' hard labour and six hours stocky was Mak's senteuce.

A description of the woman was given, and information was telephoned to the different stations, asking them to keep a look- out for suy person corresponding with the des- cription given, The police made a search for the woman, but it proved fruitless. On Wed. nesday, however, no employee of the Water Works informed Inspector Calleit that he had seen the body of a European woman in the catch-water of the Pokfoolum reservoir. The police went out with an zinbulance, and when the body was got out of the water, it was recog. nised as that of the missing woman: The remains were later identified in the martuary as that of Emily Ellen Wade, There is no doubt in the minds of the police that the woman commited suicide, and the motive for her aking her life is said to be disappointment in
