A frié d of mine visited Europe last summer for a brief stay in the land of his birth He took passage early in June and arrived in due season at Liverpool. He had been warned by ble friends to be careful, as large cities were very unsafe for travellers, who were liable to ba robbed and injured by evil disposed prople, The warning was not lost upon my friend, and in his arrival at Liverpool he inquired of a policeman where he could find a safe place to stop, The policeman huggested a first-class hotel or a temperance, loding house. My friend went in search of the latter, but it pre- sented such a forbidding: ospect that he dectin ed to enter it. It occurred to him that the clerks in the seamship office were very oblig, ing, and he went back there to ask help of them. One of the clerk told him that his mother could accommodate him, wrote the address un card, and rent a boy with him to show the way. The house was not far from the office. It was a three-story building. My friend was met by the clerk's mother and was told he could have a room on the third floor. As he was somewhat fatigued he went to it at once The room was large, with two windows open- ing on a court. There were two cols on each side of the roam and the usual furnishings. kly frend look the precaution, in lock the door en entering and sat at the window, intending to read bis new paper before going to bed. was a lovely June evening and everything was unusually quite. He was congratulating him- hell no obtaining the solitude and security he so much desired when all at once he heard voices outside the window at which he sat. Oo looking out he saw a young man who was evidently speaking to some oor in the yard below, My friend felt disturbed at this unex- pected intrusion, but as there was no attempt made to enter the rom he thought no more of it and resumed his reading. Suddenty the voices, cdused, the young man was no more visible and sitercē prevailed. My friend is a builder by trads and he was curious to find out on whai platform, the young man stood outside the window. On investigation he found there was no fire escape, no coping, nothing that a human being could cling to, only the perpendi cular wall of the house. Theis being no further disturbance he went to bed and slept peacefully. In the morning he paid for his form and incidentally spoke to the landlady about the voices and, the young man outside
the window.
