STORY OF A ROMANTIC, BLOPE, MENT.

MAGNATE'S DAUGHTER AND CHAUFFEUR.

Agamantic story of a lady-the daughter of a South African millionaire-eloping with a chauffeur in the service of her father, and being. married at Kingston-on-Thames, has just beon told. The marriage took place two months. ago, by special licenso,

On the morning of Tuesday, 14 hug, d motor-car drew up outside the offices of the registrar of marriages in Coombe-rd, Kingston.. A lady and gentleman, who were in motoring costume, alighted and entered the building, accompanied by two friends.

The gentlem'n produced a special license, which does not require that any notice should be given. Handing it to the deputy registrar, he requested him to mury thein.

CEREMONY PERFORMED,

The cerem ny was performed in the usual way, the certificate was made ou', and signed by the parties and their witnesses. The fee having been paid, the contracting parties and their friends drove nway, the proceedings having lasted only a few minutes. The deputy registrar was unaware of the position and cir- cumstances of the two whom he had united in matrimony.

-A ROMANTIC ATTACHMENT..

It now transpires that the lady was 'Miss Violet Helen Farrar, the handsome" eldest daughter of Sidney Howard Farrer, brother of Sir George. Farrar, both of whom are South. Alrican millionaires.

The gentleman was Mr. John Henry Fellows, who for some time had been employed by Mr. Farrar as a chauffeur. On, the certificate the lady was described as a spinster, za years of age, residing at King's-gardens, Have, the res dence of her father. The gentleman was. described as a bachelor and a mechanica engineer, aged 30, of 17, Westville-rd., Thames

Ditton.

Other entries in the certificate described the bridegroom's father, John Fellows, an a jour- malist, and the bride's father as a civil engineer. Mr. Fellows was educated at the Bikbeck Institute for an en ineer. His father, Mr. John Fellows, is a trustee of the London Association of Correctors of the Pres.

Mr. Fellows, jun., has appeared in sporting circles as an athlete and a cyclist of some note, and has often been seen on the track at the Crystal Palace and at the Velodromo at Putney,

PROGRESS OF THE FRIENDSHIP, Mr. Fellows, after he had become chauffeur 10 Mr. Farrar, went to the Manor House, Cook. the ham Dene, Mr. Farrar's residence on Thames. It was from there that he and the

married. It was his duty frequently to take young lady proceeded to Kingston and wore

Miss Farrar out for motor car drivos, a recrea-- tion of which she was very fond.

Only the ordinary civilities to be expected between persons occupying such different-sta- tions in life were at first exchanged, but as Mias Farrar frequently went out for drives a warmer friendship was developed.

A LOVE AFFAIR.

This finally led to mutual love and an engage. ment. They decided to get married without informing their friends,

After making the necessary arrangements, which included the renting of a small house st 'Thames Ditton, shortly after breakfast on 14 Aug. they entered a motor-car at the Manor -- House, Cookham Dene, ostensibly for the usual drive, and proceeded to Kingston-on-Thames Registry Office.

Some time afterwards, however, a massage received at Cookham Dene acquainted the bride's parents of the marriage. Naturally, the incident caused great pain in the household, such an outcome of the friendship between the young couple never having been contemplated.

THE HONEYMOON.

Mr, and Mrs. Fellows proceeded to the Fouth of England for the honeymoon. They returned. few days ago, and took up their residence it n neat-looking little house in Westrille.rd., Thames Ditton,

"

Seen there yesterday, Hr. Fellows spoke frankly about the incident, saw that it had. become public property.

"But," he added, "I should much have preferred that it had remained unknown, and both my wife and I have taken par ticular pains to keep the affair as secret ar possible. Whoever it is who has given the secret away I do not thank him for it,"

Mr. Fellows defended himself energetically" against those who would criticise his conduct.

NOT A RASH STEP.

"We loved each other, we wished to be with each other, and that is all we wanted. It was. not a rash step, taken on the impulse of the moment, for we had known each other for two years before we wept away. And we acted as we did because I felt that it was as impossible for me to ask for Mr. Farrar's consent as it was for him to give it."

'The young couple appeared to be supreme. Jy happy in their little villa, with its trim flower gardens in front and at the rear. Mr. Fellows it hopeful of obtaining a lucrative appólotment with one of the great motor-car firms.
