LIST OF PROFUSED. COPANIES,

Reference has already been made in our columas to the extraordinary activity that pre vals in industrial circles for the promoto of new enterprises and the extension of existing works, and it is interesting to make a closer study into the nature of the newly-promoted companies and to consider the amount of capital involved. The following table shows the principal undertakings newly projected and the amount of capital to be invested. Some of these have already completed the first call on: their shares, others are now making the first call, while the majority are sul in an initial

KOWLOON-CANTON RAILWAY,

TROUBLE WITH THE LADOVRERE.

roth inst. Kowloon-tong, near Yau-ma-ti, the spoi where work on the tunnel has been com Darmenced to connect Kowloon with Shatin, New Territory, by rail, was the scene of some trouble yesterday, and a free-fight would have occurred had it not been for tact used by Sergeant Appleton, of Yau-ma-ti Police Station.

A meeting of the Legislative Council was held this afternoon. Present:-His Excellency the Governor, Major Sir Matthew Nathan, KC.M.G, His Excellency Colonel lieg, R.E. (Commanding the Troop), Hon. Mr. T. Nercombe Smith (Colonial Secretary), Hon. Sh H. Spencer Berkeley, K C., (Attorney General), Hon. Mr. A. M. Thomson (Coloojat Treasurer), Hon. Captain J. Badeley (Cap. Iain Superintendent of Folice), Hon. Mr. W. Chatham Director of Public Works), llon. Mr. A. W. Brewin, Registrar General, Hoo, Mr. E. A. Hewett, Hon. Dr. Ho Kai, N., CMG, Hon. Mr. Wei Yuk, Hon. Mr. W. I Giessen, and Mr. A. G. M. Fletcher (Clerk of Councili).

AUSENT.

I he contract to build the tunnel referred to. was let out by the Government. The contract bas been sub-lel on so many occasions that the . present sub-contractor finds it difficult to engage the number of men required under the terms of the contract to do the work. The result was that sufficient hands were not employed. The cogineer-in-charge of the works, our informant says, heard of this about Bea, Mr. H. E. Pollock, K.C., and Hon. Mr. a fortnight ago and issued orders to the sub- in ten days time the proper Contractor that if Bumber of labourers Was Not al work steps would be taken for the more expeditions carrying ent

ten days' notice, yet no extra" hands were engaged. Shortly after noon yesterday seventy other labourets were engaged by the Govern ment to take the places of the sub-contractor's men and these were marched to Yowloon- tong. When the sub-contractor, beard what the Government was doing he, it was reported, engaged 140 men, and by the time the overn ment men arrived at the works they discovered. the contractor's double force hard at work.

THE LATE CAPTAIN DARNES-LAWRENCE. His Excellency, addressing the Council, said that the constitution of this assembly, and the conditions of life in this Colony were such that we were frequently called upon to regret the departure of members and others. Often they were men going home on well earned leave, but, would return; but it was acidom they were called upon to see them go to their last resting place. Since the last meeting of this Council they had had to deplore the un- timely death of the Hon. Captain Barnes Law rence; an efficient, capable officer, and a noble, kind-hearted and honourable gentleman, (hear, hear), who had fallen a victim to his zeal for the care of the interests of the Harbour and the shipping community in general, in the distress following the typhoon of the 18th ult. He was sure that the sympathy of the whole of the hon. members of the Council were with the widow and daughters of the late lamented member. (Hear, hear;}

The Government masnine were told to get to work and the contractor's men, to get out. They would not leave the works, deilber would they allow the other marans to take their place. At first matters looked threatening and it was feared the gangs would clash. When the situation looked black the Yaumati Sta tion was asked to send out a posse of police to keep order, which they did, and for some hours afterwards the works were under police supervision.

Sergeant Appleton, who had charge of the police gang, spoke to the head of the sub contractor's coolics, and it was only through tact and persuasion that the sergeant was able to get the contractor's men to leave, and a fight, which in all probability would have occurred, was timely averted.

The Government labourers took charge of the masonry part of the work later and so far the dispute has been satisfactorily settled.
