The notorious outlaw Vali-Kader has been betrayed by his followers and was arrested at Haimen on lle was afterwards Thursday last. taken to Soochow in custody.
It is reported that the Shanghai Tuotai will order that Vah-Kader be brought to Shanghai for trial.
The warrant for the outlaw's arrest was issued in February, 1904, but antil now he successfully evaded capture.

A brother named Vah Maomao, who was undergoing 20 years' im..' prisonment, on charges similar to those which have been framed against Vah-Kader, was killed, in the out- break among the prisoners at Shang- hai gaol some time ago.

In consequence of reports publish- in the daily Press in Tokio con- cerning the Governinent subsidy to, the Nippon Yusen Kaisha, there were violent fluctuations yesterday, in the Stock Exchange, at Tokio, in the shures of the steamship company.
In an article relating to the financial ability of the NY.K. reproduced in our issue of last evening, it will be seen that the Company has been making, dividends at the rate of 22 per cent. per annum for several years past, but

CARPENTERS DEMAND HIGHER WAGES.

Nearly every ship and boat building yard in the Colony are having trouble with their, ba tive operatives. At noon westerday the few hundred carpenters employed by the Hang. kong and Whampoa Dock Company lodged a demand for higher wages. The men have asked for a ten-cent increase on their day wastes. They are at present drawing fifty-five cents a day.
The demand for a rise in wages was, it is stated, coupled with the threat that should i! be refused the men would go on strike.
