ANGRY SCENES AT RAILWAYMEN'S CONFERENCE.
London, 4th October. After angry scenes at the Conference of Railway Servants' Society at Cardiff, a resolu tion was carried requiring Railwaymen's can. didates for Parliament in sign a pledge, sup pning the dependent Labour Party. This decision is regarded as a rebuff to Mr. Bell, M. P., the Railwaymen's representative in the House, who strongly opposed the resolution, and a triumph for Mi. Keir Harðið.

DULE OPERATIVES.
CARPENTERS DEMAND HIGHER WAGES. Nearly every ship and boat building yard in the Colony are having trouble with their na- tiva operatives. At noon yesterday the few hundred carpenters employed by the Hong kong and Whampoa Dock Company lodged a demand for higher wages. The mep have asked for a ten-cent increase on their daily wages. They are at present drawing fifty-five cents a day.
+
The demand for a rise in wages (was, it is slated, coupled with the threat that should it be refused the men would go on strike,
The situation presents no alarming or serious aspect, as some would make it appear to do, Chinese labourers, like their Western brethren, have a keen appreciation of the economic laws of demand and supply, and profitting by the abnormal amount of work which recent events Irave created for their fraternity, are seeking to obtain some slight extra remuneration.
As far as could be learnt from outside sources, the Directors of the Dock Company ale, we are informed, considering the labour problem created by the special exigencies of the time. It is confidently anticipated that so developments will arise tending to create a disturbance in the even tenour of the ship yards' daily work.
Later.
Since writing the above news has reached us to the effect that the carpenters have actually gene on strike, and no work was done by them to-day at the Docks.

PRELIMINARY NOTICE.
requested H.E. Viceroy Shum to Do ify all the Captains of the Imperial Revenue Cutters, the Imperial Maritime Customs authorities, and the lasd guards, to keep most careful watch, more especially at night, for these smugglers, who when caught-if they are caught at all-are to be handed over to the nearest yamen, in order that they may be dealt with as severely as possible, so that their punishment may act His Majesty's Treasury Office, as a deterrent to others engaging in this class of dishonest trade. This applies only to Chinese Brugglers, but should the culprits be foreigners they must be handed over to their particular Consul for proper treatment, while their ships and cargoes shall be confiscated, in accordance with the precedent constituted in the case in which an American, in the reign of Emperor Tang Tse about the year 1856, came out in command of a vessel loaded with arms and ammunition, and made for a Yangtze pont, with a view to landing and selling the same at a very high profit. But he was unable to realize his hopes, for as soon as the nature of the cargo he carried was made known, was arrested, by order of the authorities at Canton, and after a trial by the American con. sul at that port he was found guilty and sen- tenced to a long term of imprisonment, his vessel and all that was in her being confiscated and forfeited to the Chinese Government.
