* DAYŤ JONES'S LÖCKER. Those er egregiously who venture to assert that sailing ships are rarely, if ever; posted as missing with all hands, and even the steamship comes on the missing list far more frequently than some rappare. Nevertheless, having due regard to the enormous number of all sorts and conditions of ships in active service, the greater rapidity with which voynges are made by many of them and the curious cargues occasionally carried, of a nature quite unknown to the old timers, it got without saying that the per centage of missing ships is comparatively in, significiat. I is to be feared that in samo in. stances shipmasters feel they have but Hobermania, for Canton. ann's choice in the course to pursue ; and there- fore proceed to sea with vessels so trimmed atashin Murn, for watow.
positively to invite disaster should bad weather be experienced after sailing Sailing ships have had quite a bad time of latè, despite the introduction of labour saving appliances, both under the head of missing and lost. by strand
ing. It is open to question whether the age of steam and steel is favourable to the production of the class of sailor and officer which was ia evi'ence on board American clippers forty or fifty years ago. Even in that remote period there, were deadheads going to me for a living but the smart seaman of every grade had plenty of opportunity to gain experience
- which is wanting to the rising generation, and the modern sailing ship of metal construction
เ
is much more like a machina ship than was her wooden predecessor.
Curiously enough, an unusually large num- ber of metal steamships-and siling, verrels of metal or of wood were posted as missing
during the twelve months of 1905. At least nipeteen stean er, seventeen iron or steel were never heard from after them had sailed away beneath the boundary line of sea and sky under

disappearance must forever remain a mystery of ocean, although it must not be forgotten that a sailing vessel having in her bold bållast of nature such as is occasionally supplied at posts
of the Far East in at the merev of wind and waver. - Case oil is cargo which requires careful ballasting, and several sailing ships thus laden have either disappeated DT made inordinately long passages between Atlantic coast paris of the United States and either China or Japan. Last year the French ship Lafayette only launched three years pre- viously, was never heard of after sailing from "New York" for China with ease nil, and the German ship Robert Rickmers, of 2,174 tons, shared a similar fate on the way from Philadel- phia to Japan, Sailing vessels missing.in ballast last year were the Eulamine, the Edith Mary, the Varg, the May and, the flonolulu. It is supposed that five of the total number of "missing axlilng ships last year four.dered dur
ing a severe gule while making for England with fall cargoes almost within sight of port.
Even this year there are not wanting ex- amples of missing sailing ships. The Cuidoon has not been heard of since the tailed from Jacksonville, Fla., for Grenada, W. 1, with cargo of lamber; the Norwegian bark Faguna from Pascagoula for Colon, with lumber, has also good; the French ship St. Donation has disappeared between Bordeaux and Adelaide and the St. John schanner Energy, with mit from Oporto for her home port; the metal ship Drumerate, which left Astoria for Manila, with- lumber, and the German ship Rodenbek, bound from Liverpool to Australia, ara mera than. enough for the record of 1906. There are
· several steamers also on the missing list.
