SUPPLEMENT TO THE SIKAWEI DAILY WEATHER CHART, NO. 92.
رحمه
September 30th, 1906,,” The interest wüb which our report of last Saturday has been received, encourages us to publish new particulars, very kindly sent us, especially as these documents will coable us to give a definitive track of the storm. We beg tha, captains who have so kindly sent in their reports to accept our best thanks,
こ
The earliest exact position of the cyclone signalled in the report of the U.S.N. auxilliary transport Criar, communicated by Mr. Alb. B. Randall, chief officer. It agrees quite sati: factorily with the warning issued by the Obser vatory here on the 16th, according to which the centre had been making for the S. of Foimo a.
The Corsar had left Cavite (Bay of Manila) for Shanghai on the 13th. The ship's barometer, a first-class one, was showing practically the same pressure as that of the standard of Manila Observatory.
All went on smoothly until the evening of the 14th. At to p.m. a light N.N.E. breeze arose but soon abated, the sŋy became overcael and threatening. At midnight, the wind again. biew from N.N.E., then backed stowly to N.W. 163.30 at 3 am, (15th), and W.N.W. at 8 a.m. After
105

wards the wind blew with short squalls, which gradually increased from force 7 10.4. At daw, à very distinct Goṛth swell was noted.
Ba, the centre passed to the North of the their work satisfactorily for a month. In this! Delds between 9:45 and 10 a.m.
case also the appeal was successful, and the whole force resuming duly at 4 p. m. med returned in their respective' stations, the Thus,
"The accounts published in the newspapers make it unnecessary to expatiote on the des cription of the storm.
:
In a former dote, extracts from the log of the French mail : Oceanien, Commander Courel, were given. The registering barome». 's curve shows that the minimum of pressure took place about 2 nm. on the 8th. The cen
consequently must bave passed to the South of that ship a little earlier. Assuming that she was a few miles South-west of Breaker Point, we find that it took the vortex eight hours or nearly sa lo cover the distance of about forty- mails. Our first estimait worked our of fewer five miles between the French and English
dats had given a velocity of 37 miles: wo now find 14.3 miles an hour.
The passage from Formosa to Hongkong is much more accurately known. As we have said, the centre must have passed about les of twelve miles North of the Cesar, on the 16th about 1.15 a.m. I passed Naith of the Delk and very near her, on the 18th, about 9.45 4.m., having therefore, travelled 380 miles in 561 hours, the mean velocity is 6/7 miles per hour.
for the present the strike is ended, and the men' have bean persuaded that, after a month, any real grievances they may have will be sym pathetically listened to, if they are presented to the authorities in the proper manner.

cheeks, said in ufled tones that the widow was the cause of the whole trouble, and that if; she had behaved herself as the widows of re spectable farmers should do he has only butied three husbands-there would have been Bo trouble. The widow when called in the box was very backward in telling the Couft the true story, he, said that the defendants went to her house yesterda, accused her of killing their pig, and then without further ado they went for her tooth and nail with a stick. She then painted to her bandaged head. This story was known to have been a pure invention, and when told so she gave another yarn, which was to the effect that she owed the defendants a small debt and that they, failing to recover it, just assaulted her. But the true cause of the trouble came at last. Hogs and debts had nothing to do with it; but miete Man, There is an o'd man living in the gillage that has taken a fancy to the widow before the knot was tied with husband No. 1, but he was non-suited. The two defendants, said complainant, had been trying for a long time to get her to marry the old man, bui on each occasion they were told to mind their business. "Why,' com mented the widow, "the man is bed-ridden, anding Wo Company... besides he is too old" Yesterday, she con Yan Wo Company tinued, the two matchmakers, one carrying a 'Chap Sing Company stick, called again and things really got warm. They pleaded for the old man until they could plead no more, and when the widow's temper rose and she told the women to go or else get thrown out, the got a tap on the skull that knocked her senseless. She recovered con- sciousness eventually and brought the charge The defendants, who were still weeping, bad nothing to say, and his Worship fined them Sio each and bound them over in the sum of $15 to be of good behaviour for one month.:

One thing obly was left out of the -Captain's report, which we must mentiễn: the clear-sighted and unerring way in which he saw the coming danger. We know from a note of the passengers, that long before the very first squall, all was tied up and ready on deck to weather the hurricans. Now, of course, since leaving. Singapore, Captain Andrews had re- „ceived, no signal of any, kind. The report simply saysSeptember 18, 4 am, "Wet snanse, hard clouds, greenish sky, north-east swell; short intervals." He was then to the outh of Cap Rock where the swell must also have been felt, even protably on the 17th in jhe alternoon.
