This, Mrs. Craigie refused to do, and as the -publishers also stood firm, she took the M.S. to Mr. T Fisher Unwin, who accepted it un- conditionally, Mrs, Craigie believed, on the recommendation of Mr. E. Garnett, the son of

Mrs. Craigie was wont to describe her earlier works as philosophical fantasia, und said that they were written under the influence of the teaching of ilegal, whom she regarded as the first of, metaphysicians. Books of this class, written for the purpose of showing that a fallureiopiang, from the world's point of view was not bet cessarily a moral failure-on the contrary, that
It may be a great success-wers "The Sinnes Comedy," "A Study in Temptations," and "A Bundle of Life,"
With "The Gods, Stune. Morinis, and Lord Wickenham fresh ground was broken.
HER AREATEST JUCCESS. Bat it was reïarved for "The School for Sainis," in which were introduced references to modern history touching on the diplomacy of Disraeli, to bring Mrs. Craigie her bigges success.
Mrs. Cacigie's other great success was scored in the dramatic world with the production of "The Ambassadors” al the St. James's Theatre in 1898. This was quite Mr. Craigie's first dramatic venture, for before this the had written a pretty little lever do rideau, called "Journeys End in Lovers Meeting," which she adapted from the French, and which was produced at a matinge at Daly's Theatre, with Eller Terry, Ferbertion, and William Terriss in the cast, before one of the most brilliant of audiences.
f
Following this, tou, came a small but very original play called “A Repomance," played ar the St Jamer's with Miss Julie Opp and Mr. George Alexander as its interpreters.
AS A LECTURER,
But Mis, Craigie, who was once described as "The Whistler of the Stage, and "the Bernard Shaw of the Boudoir,* was more than the
novelist and dramatist she described herself as
for she has lectured on "The Artist Life,” tak- ing Balzac, Warner, und Brahms for illustrative subjects, at the Philosophical Institution in Edinburgh and the University of Birmingham.
Mr. Craigie married when she was 19, and most of her studies took place as an alleviation to the ill-health which followed a union that all the world knows was an unfortunate one. Her only son, Joha Churchill Craigie, ●be used to say, was more to her than all the novels, all the plays, all the articles, and all the societies that ever existed..
The funeral will take place on Friday at St. Mary, Kental-green. The first part of the. service will be coħilucted at the Church of the Jesuit Fathers, Farm-81, where there will be a requiem mass.--Morning Lead r.
