their match. He takes with him to his new Appointment. in fact, the reputation, - not unearned, of being one of the most successful thwarters of foreign enterprise who has ever held high office in China; and foreigners who have had to deal with him in important matters in Canton, will surely endorse that character of the out-going Viceroy. He has been freely censured for all the difficulties which have arisen in connection with the Canton-Hankow and other railways in the Liang Kwang; ond in addition to these sins, he has not been held altogether blameless in the matter of the recent recrudescence of piracy in the Southern Chinese rivers, which has been ascribed by no less eminent no authority that the Chinn Association, to his lax administration. From a l'eking point of view, however, he has been a firm and successful ruler of the great Sou- theta satrapy, and a confident expectation is entertained in the capital that he will be equally serviceable to the Govemment in

BUGUS BAROS IN HONGKONG.

REMARKABLE CAREER OF A SWINDLER.

The story of a bogus Baron has been brought to light by the Paris correspondent of the Mail - He gives the following account :-An American woman, a spinster of about 30, belonging to one of the best-known. Californian famílies met at. Hongkong recently a man who gave himself out to be Baron Santos d'Clivo voo Dabrowolsky Donnersmarck, His available asselt appear to have been the clothes le stood up in, a stack of stories describing his own heroism during the siege of Port Arthur, and a packet of visiting cards on which his name and tille were surmounted by a coronet. The "baron' paid vigorous court to the American, and soon married her in the Chapel of the Assumption at Manlits 7fter the marriage the "baron na barocess" "ärranged to return to America viz Europe. Ji was just at this point that the bridegroom's financial resources failed. By some indvertence a large remittance front His “uncle,' Count Henckelven Dunneismarck, did not come to hand, nor were several large cheques he awaited enclosed in the correspond. ence he received from his cousin and pariner" Signor Marconi, of wireless telegraphy fame., His large deposit in a chicago bank, which had been crippled by the San Francisco disas-

year. By such i les the "baron" induced his bride to hand over the large amount of cash in her possession. Her money paid the hotel bills and first-class passages for himselt and wife. from Maals to New York. What was left he converted into a letter of credit in his own name. On June 22 they sailed from Hongkong on the Non German Lloyd steamer Preussen, -spent a couple of weeks in Egypt, and came on ia Marseilles by the Hohenzollern of the same WELSBACH'S IN. line. Arrived in Paris they stopped at a well-

Although the "barco's" name appears on the marriage certificate as given above, books in possession bore the name "Santos Kvas Conged in some cates and "S. E. Courad in others. It is considered quite likely that this is his seal name. No directory of German nability men- tions such a person as he styles himself. The baronets" who has thus been victimised is still in Paris,
