HISTORY OF TRINITY HOUSE.

The capital of England and of the Empire is rich is the possession of many anciest and honourable juilds and associations whose tradition and integrity rank properly among the city's chicsest treasures. At the present day the rights and duties of Trinity House are concerned chiefly with the management and upkeep of lighthouses, bunys, lightships, and the like, the control of pilais, the guidance and advice of Admiralty Court Judges, and the relief of ancient mariners. But, even as recently as one hundred years ago, when Napoleon threatened England, Trinity House was appealed to by the Sovereign, and became responsible, with its traditional loyal throughness and despatch, for a deferce of the Thames which rendered it practically Impregnable.

Str. fellerophon from Singapore-Had fine was, as has been shown, respons ble for the fear weather and light variable aire during the

beaconing and safegarding the English coasts, from the earliest to the present time, it was only in 1836 that, by Act of Parliament all coast lights came absolutely and finally under its control. The long delay in teach ing this desirable end was caused by the practice of the Crown in giving paten's, or grants, of lighthouses to private individuals, who a rent, and were entitled to collect

paid tolls. It was a bad practice, from the sailor's point of view, as is shown by the act that candles were in use in Smoaton's Fddystone lighthouse down to 18to, when, its base having expired, the Elder Brethren were able to obtain cputrol of it, and instal lamps with reflectors.

Besides its engineer-in-chief, always a man of eminence in his profession, Trinity House has an adviser of the highest scientific attain- ments. Lord Rayleigh occupies the position to-day which was previously held by such men as Dr. Tyndall and Professor Faraday, the latter having been quoted by the emporation's

passage.
