H. C. Hogan and J. B. Robertson were before Mr. Colman in the Third Magistrate's Court on Saturday, reports the Singapore Free Press of 20th Aug., when the evidence of Mr. H. L, Coghlan, a valuator in the case, was taken. The offences alleged against H. C. Hogan, formerly chairman of directors and manager director of logan & Co., Lid, are as manager and director of the Company' falsely stating in the pros peclus, that the profits of the former company were $117.014.63, thereby deceiving St. Vincent B. Down and inducing him to take shares in

falsely stating in the balance sheet of Hugan the Company to the amount of $7,000. De- fendant was further charged with chealing by

Mr. H. L. Coghlan, auctioneer and valuator of 5, Rafles Place, deposed to having been con- nected with valuation business in Singapore for 17 years. He had had experience in valu- ng machinery on many occasions during this period. He considered himself cumpetent to value machinery. Witness knew the firm of Hogan & Co, now in liquidiation and he was called in by the directors to make a valuation of stock, machinery and,plant on June 30, 1995. The directors gave him stack lists, lists of machinery and plant, furniture, &c. and asked bin to pat a fair value on them for the balance sheet. Witness inspected and checked every- thing on the premises he was told.

A street coolie came before Mr. 8. H. I. Gompertz, at the Police Court, this morning, and admuted a charge of stealing a quantity of clothing from a house in Pottinger Street, early this morning.
