quite a water famine for the time that it is turned off. If it is not turned off on purpose by the water authorities to make the people feel the hardship of the water famine, and then make them feel grateful for a scanly supply when the authorities graciously can 'sent to let them have a little more, it must be cut off by some careless, water coolies who in the course of their work turn it off, and afterwards neglect to turn it on again. Think ofthe enormous amount of money house-owners have to spend on account of the rider-main system, and then think of the serious grievance under which they have to suffer by getting very little water after spending so much money, The introducer of this system must naturally repent of his fault if he knows that for the people it proves a woc.
All the reservoirs are full enough, and why can't we be allowed at least a proper, if not a copious, supply of water every day?-Yours,

QUESTIONS IN PARLIAMENT.
On the 11th July, Sir C. Schwann asked the Under-Sec einry for the Colonies whether the Crown colony called the Straits Settlements had been induced to acquire certain docks at Singapore from a company called the Tonjeng Pagar Dock Company at a cost of about £5,500,000; whether the move for the acquisi

If the hon. member will refer to page 9 of the aps. pendix to the volume he will find a despatch, dated Nov. 4, 1924, from the late Secretary of State, which sets out fully the reasons for sug gesting the acquisition of this undertaking. The directors arë Mestis,. W. P. Waddell J. E. I omenij, C. Sugden, W. H. Shelford, and A. G. Faber; they are all resident ia Singapore, I have no official information ns in the names and addresses of the principal shareholders, but l'observe that a list has ap. peared on more than one occasion in a London newspaper. The calculation in the last part of the question is approximately.correct.
Sir E. Sassoon asked whether in the case of the Tanjong Pagar Dock Company Arbitration was resorted to at the suggestion of the Straits Government; whether any attempt was made to come to terms fos a price, sither before or after expropriation has been resolved upon; and, if so, with what result; did the company make any offer to the Government to dispose of their interests, and, if so, what were the terms of the offer; what have been the detailed
