THE OCEAN-CARRYING PRADE.

Since the war it has become apparent that future competition is the carrying trade of the Pacific and the Orient will be Panied.on with increased determination among the great steamship companies, writes the Japan Chronicle. The situation is aggravated by the ammut of tonnage available, especial ly Japanese orige rince the war. and already in the trade from Japan companies have experienced the ill-ffects of many steamers being released from the Government military transport service-by which about two hundred vessels entered into competition for freight, resulting in the rapid decline of sales, The beginning of the, era of acute rivalty ap pears to have now been fairly inaugurated. Leading Japanese and Britiste companies trad ing between Shanghai and Bangkok are cop tending for the trade between these parts, and competition on the part of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha will be exterhird by the establishment of a new ervice between any gng. Swatow, and Bangkok: The future struggle will br come severe if the Japanese companies, as is suggested, should combine for a common pur pore. This has been proposed for checking

competition in the domestic trade and effective ly meeting the increasing loreign competition, and it is a method which will probably meet with favour among Japanese shipowners.
