GOWNS AND DAMAGHS.

Suppose that a woman dressed for the thea- tre or the opera should dine at a restaurant be: fore going to the entertainment of the mind. Suppose that her gown of exquisite texture and délicate tint should be one of the joys of her life and a genuine thing of beauty. Fuppose that a waiter should stumble in passing her and spill a dish of tomater, snup over the gown, thereby splashing its dainty complexion of cream with ugly freckles of red. Would the gown be ruined or would it just be slightly in- jured. -

This is the problem which confronted a legal nuthority in New Jera-v a day or two azn. Mere Man has no disposition to comment up favourably on that decision, which held that the gown was merely damaged, not ruined, and that the owner of it was entitled to the receipt of $5 from the proprietor of the restaurant. Jersey Justice in proverbial.

Still, Mere Man would like to see a cass of this sort tried before a jury of experts, say women's tailors, or even women themselves 1 there is anything in this world of which Mare

Man may be sure, it is that a jury of women's

tailors would return a verdict that no woman would wear a gown over which tomato saun or cocktail", either oyster or Martini, kad been spilled. That jury would' vow that the woman ought to have a new gown, though the jury- men might perhaps differ as to who ought to pay for it.
