“it is to be feared that some of the enthusiasm off in the course of time and that some of the which is at present being manifested will wear

schools will perish either from the want of pupils or from the want of funds. The move- ment is, however, undoubtedly a strong one, as fact that until at least primary comes general throughout their country they cannot hope to emerge once and for all from the present oppressed condition. There is therefore room to hope that the movement, instead of diminishing, will gain force as time goes on, and should this turn out to be the case there will be undoubtedly a great future lo store for the country.

"To-day a representative of the Korsa Dasly News had an opportunity of inspecting a gir school which held its first session to day. It is called the Yang Klu School and is situated on the road which leads to the Peking Pass, The management is a strong one, the com- mitee is a powerful one, and the teachers ap- pear to be capable.

Lone

"Although, besides this school, there is a sort of academy for the daughters of nobles under the patronage of Lady Ond, while the that this latter is not well attended, while the school which we visited to-day already boasts an attendance of thirty scholars.

"The principal difficulty in the way appears to be the conservatism of the people. With great obstinacy they cling to their old custom of keeping their women folk in seclusion, and the promoters of this school candidly admit that this is the greatest difficulty in front' of them.

"The Korean people do not seem to fealise that as the first six or seven years of the life of a Korean boy are passed under the care of his mother bow essential it is that the mother herself should be a woman of some education so that when the time arrives for the child to go to school he shall go equipped with soms slight knowledge or at least untraminelled with foolish ideas and superstitions which an ignorant mother has picked up from hearsay.

A

"We therefore wish all theie different edu. cational movements every success, and if we may offer a word of advice it is that the tendency to make a fetlsh of Chinens writing and Chinese literature should be curbed some what. In the old days when different nations were not in ready communication with each other China and Korea undoubtedly 'made much progress in literature and arts and scien ces as did other nations, and it is the facilities which other countries now enjoy for the ex change all the best in thair

acd literaturn progressive ideas which have led to Korea being left to far behind the times. Therefore it is important, we think, that the directors of schools should aim at making scholars and students independent of their teachers as soon as possible. Let it be their aim not to se how many Chinese characters they can cram into the head of a child but to determine how few are absolutely necessary to continue its education in directions of greater utility.

"The study of Korean literature has a patiiotic ring about it, but it is not the patriotiam ibat counts for anything nowadays. Just as the London financier keeps himself daily informed of the movements of all the money markets of the world so must the pro gressive Korean be able to follow and emulate the progress of other nations."

matures within 60 days of planting. It is so short that the natiyes have a saying that the cock can pick the flowers off it without step- picg off the ground. The macal box is a some what remarkable running vine. It produces a tuberous root of great dietetic value, Whole familles, in fact, live upon these tubers for months. In May the green shoots come up, and by November the tubers are ready for harvesting. They are as large as a potato, and are purplish in colour. It is cooked very big before being eaten. The smallest of the tubers are left in the ground at 'harvesting time, and there ensure the next annual supply. Another variety of macal yields only one or two tubers to each plant, but they are of an immense size Some of the specimens are so large that four of them will fill a basket. The flesh of the tuber is white, and appears to consist of pure starch. An, enormous quantity is obtained from an Acre. Another running plant produces tubers weighing about three pounds each. They are eaten roasted, boiled, and raw. It gives im.. mense yields to the acre, and is said to be one of the most healthy cropping tuberous plants in the world.
