The largest output' is from Fukuoka Prefecture, the Hokkaido being second, and the Joba Hitachi, Iwaki and Iwashiro) district third. The production in 1995 in those districts; respectively was 7,519,000, 1,170,000, and 1,040,000 luns. During the last 15 years the output in the Joban district has increased over twenty-fold, that of the Hokkaido by five-fold, and that of Fukuoka Prefecture by more than foer-fold. The total production to the country during the 15 years under review has, as shown in the foregoing table, increased by 300 per cenu, or at the rate 11 per cent. against each preceding year.
Reviewing the general situation last year it will be seen that the greatly increased damaod brought about an unprecedentedly high price, and this has gived a great impetus to the coal industry. In the Chika-ho district (Kyushu) alone no fewer than 59 small mines were new-
opened in the course of last year. Despite these circumstances, however, the production was not as large as might have been expected, mainly owing to the inadequate transportation facilities, the damage done to mines by floods, and the scarcity of labour. Regarding the pro bable untant this year there is no doubt that it will show an increase over last year, judging from the restoration of several of the damaged mines, the increased supply of labour, and the opening-up of new cual-fields, some of which are very large. In order to estimate the pro bable increase of production this year it is necessary to look into the conditions of that market, transport facilities, etc. The domestic Consumption of coal, which was only 1,520,000 tons in 1891, had: risen to. 7,410,000 tons in 1934, showing an increase of 480. per cent. Similarly the amount of export had advanced from 1,740,000 to 4,600,000 tons during the
same interval. Particulars are shown in the following table,
Domestic

A humbug may be advertised with a noise like the blowing of a thousand trumpets, but it is soon detected and exposed. The manufacturers of
