THE CHINESE IN SAN
FRANCISCO.
The destruction by fire of the immigration certificates of the thousands of the Chinese resident in San Francisen at the time of the earthquake in April last, suggests the question of the re-registration of all Chinese now in the United States. Already there are grounds for believing that there is a strong probability that an order will soon be made by the Department of Commerce and Labour calling for such reregistration. We have it on the authority of a Washington despatch of recent date that American officials are about to decide whether new certificates shall be issued to those in the stricken dis trict or whether a census of the Chinese throughout the country shall be made and new certificates issued to all of them. OUTRAGE AÍ LEIGHTON HILL,

JAPANESE LADY GHASTLY WOUNDED.
PRESUMABLY THE WORK OF ROBBERS. Another of those daring outrages, far more bold in its execulion than that of the Bateman case somethree years ago, which aroused such arroto of insecurity of life and propeity in Hongkong, occurred, a No. 4, Leighton Hill Road, Happy Valley, this morning. The result of the dastardly act of robbery, which is the theory
Mrs. Aoki, a Japanese Indy, and wife of Captain Aski, superiatradest of the Nippon conceivable in the present case, is that
Yusen Kauha's line of steamers in Hongkong, was removed to hospital suffering from serious nife wounds, which it is hoped may not, but, it is fenced, might terminate fatally.
The news of the outrage was communicated to us at a late hour this afternoon and im mediately a longkang Telegraph representa- tive was dispatched to make inquiries. The police at No. 1 Police Station were interviewed and they were, as is natural in such circum- stances, raiber reticent over the matter. All
we could gather was thint Mrs. Aoki was removed to hospital at a late hour this moming suffering from knife wounds in the abdomen, arms and ears.
From other sources likely to be better in- formed oftheoccurrence, nothing definite could be obtained. This much it has been possible to ascertain, however, Captain and Mrs. Aoki and their "boy" were the only occupants of the house. This morning the bay left for the market to purchase provisions for the day, and on re- turning home he was met by the sensational discovery of his mistress lying on the kitchen floor of the house, in a pool of blood. On Mrs. Aoki seeing her servant she motioned to him. to approach her and in a voice subdued by ex- haustion, through loss of blood, asked him to send for a doctor and her husband. The "boy."" with all haste, rushed out of the home and summoned a Japanese doctor residing in Wanchai Road and then proceeded to fetch Captain Aoki, and Inter, the police, "When the police arrived Mrs. Ahol had already been removed to hospital, but they succeeded in finding the 'knife (with which, it is presumed, the lady was stabbed) on the kitchen floor.
From the fact hastily gathered it can only
be conjectured that robbery was the principal mative of the dastardly assault. It is surmised

It must also be borge in mind that it is only for "occasions" that any expensive material is used by the ladies in the tropics and the cos tumes for which they are used never require the allention of the laundryman. Thus, in common fairness, it must be said that it appears somewhat harsh treatment to rush into Court and sue a hardworking laundryman for the fult shop value of a slightly damaged garment, a value at which alone that same washerman would in all probability be able to provide three such garments. If everyone were BO ready to take their linen into Court" the washerman of the Colony might as well put up their shutters at once, and migrate to "green hields and pastures new," for their means of livelihood would be gone. Ladies, and I say it with all deference, should be a bit more for bearing and not expect the rough Chinese
coolie washerman to handle delicas materials in a manner' which nine out of ten of themselves would be, in all probability, unable to attempt. A little more of this forbearance and we should be spared these very ridiculous scenes, in Court, which are neither edifying. nor instructive, and reflect but very poorly on their instigators.Yours, etc.,
