With the development of the Darwinian theory of evolution our theories of standards of personal beauty were considembly clarified. It became evident that the qualities which we admire in types of female loveliness were all consciously or subconsciously connected with JAVA ideas which were themselves, in the last resort,

regarded not so much as ideals of beauty at types of female ugliness. Even if we regard the great creative types of the ancient civiliza tion, it is remarkable how far we seem to have travelled. Probably no modern artist secure in appealing to the popular taste would venture to give a female figure the waist or the neck or even the chin of the Venus of Melos, Still less, perhaps. would he venture to repeat the lines of the Venus of the Capitol. In many of the representations of the female face by the Greek sculptors it may be noticed that while the upper part of the face, probably as repre- senting the intellectual qualities, continues to Five is the highest esthestic pleasure, the lower part does not do so to the same extent, A slight element of coarseness, and perhaps of cruelty, probably suggested to the moders mind. The head of Juno after olycletes is an example of what is perhaps generally trus of idealization of the female face by the Greeks, If we regard the esthetic standards of the racing as ultimately related to social utilities, it is inevitable that we must think of

considerable change us having taken place and as being still

La progras,

The sensuousness of egriier types of female beauty does not satisfy the modern mind. There is a craving for more than even the passive strength and intellectuality of the female face. as the Greek genius rendered it immo tal in marble. We crave even for more than the exteran motherhood of woman medieval Europe sought to represent it in its masterpieces of coloring. What the modem artist seems to be driven, by the race craving, to bring to the birth is the face of as chical type which shall add something to all that was in the past; that face of which we even now catch occasional glimpses; the face which shall suggest to us something of the spirit of the universal sympathy, the univer sal tolerance, the universal refinement of the future for which bumanity years. As Tolstoy justly points out, the perception underly and inspiring all the religious thought of the age is the consciousness that the well-being of the race lies in the brotherhood of man, It is a consciousness which leans more into the in- fiate than any similar conception in the past, for it embraces a consciousness of brotherhood even with those in the unborn future. The changes which are taking place in our stand. ards of taste and personal beauty are probably the changes which are struggling to transform this perception into feeling."

E. A, HEWÉTT,

Superintendent. Hongkong, th June, 1906.

The Tokyo and Yokohama Guilds of sugar- merchants have addressed memorials to the Premier and the Minister for Finance, asking.4 that measures should be taken to check the heavy importation of saccharine in anticipation of the increase of the Customs duty on that article. The memorialists congratulate the Government upon taking determined action for checking the importation of saccharine by increasing the Customs duty from 15 sen to: Y6o per kin and declares that the sugar-bust- ness and the nation are indebted to the Govem ment for its action. The object in thus increas ing the duty is to protect the sagar-business: of the Empire and to check the imporia tion of an obnoxious food-stuff. But the effect of the Government's action, say the memorial-... ists, is proving just the contrary, tending to. increase the evil. There are yet four months to elapse before the new Tariff comes into operation, and during this interval immense importations of saccharine are being made, and already the amount contracted for exceeds 200,000 lbs. The memorialists observe that during the war sugar-merchants, in common with the rest of the nation, made great sacri- fices and responded to the demand of the National Treasury, and the wounds so in- flicted are not yet healed. If another heavy blow is dealt them by the enormous in Portation of saccharine it may result in a panic in the trade, loss of revenue to the Government, and serious consequences may be ultimately brought upon business circles generally Have been patronised by the Hongkong Club, When such an immense amount of the ob Hongkong Hotel, Telegraph Co., Messrs.
