BRITAIN'S GREY-HAIRED

REGIMENT,

ALL OVER SIXTY, SOME OVER EIGHTY.

In the Army they call them the "Grays,”

It is not because of the colour of their horses; tio Lima Portuguese gunboat, boo, Allbano

they haven't any; and if they had they could scarcely ride them now. No, the name comes from their hair. Grey, it is, and white; grown grey and white making Empire.

In civilian life they are known as the "Pensioners." The regiment is made up of six hundred or more old soldiers, all over sixty years of age. Most of them are wall in the sovention, many have said good-bye to eighty, They wou uniform and have sticks. But they are not this cases, made to twirl and to strike purs wishy they are asb, stout and strong. 10 lean upon.

The "Greys" carry their decorations quietly, but if you ask for particulars, the aged wearer will give them. He will tell you the tale of Balaclava, or of the horrors of Cawnpore; of Dostring A faw thrills from half-a-dozen campaigns you may have forgotten, may be

heard never

of.

You will learn a lot of history if you sit there long enough and listen.

Patriotic school teachers, the vicinity of the pensioners barracks at Chelses sometimes walk their children through the grounds to show them the living relics of battles that the scholare have

baen studying.

The bracks is conducted just like other barracks, except that there is no reveille sound. ed, and there are, of course, fewer parades. There are the cooks, the sentries, the orderly. men. There is promotion; there are badges for good conduct. They have sentry-boxes, and there is a guard-room for the reception of insubordinates.

A "prisoner's" escort usually consists of two "young" privates, aged about sixty-five. Ons hand

gripping the prisoner's arm, the other grasping their stick, they "rush" him down to

clink" at the pace of snails..

Every man gave up his pension when he entered the barracks. la return, he receives good food, lodging, washing clothes, tobacco,

daily allowance of beer, and (privates) two pence a day.

The seventy-year-old corporal will tell you the story of how he got his stripe with the pride of a seventeen-year-old recruit. It caused a lot of fexinusy among the other chaps in my company, but I couldn't 'alp that,"

You learn that full-sergeants wear cocked hats, and get four shillings a week, and (in s whisper) "a decent bit in tips, I reckon, from folk wat 'em guardin' the big gate."

Around the great hall are swords, and shields and blunderbusses. They have all cracked, of cleaved, or blazed at England's enemies ¦ some thousands of miles away,, and a lifetime since. They were used by those old warriors scattered round the

square

Up thou steps, ranged round the flagroom, are hung colours from all the ends of the earth, The men outside captured them, in the long, long ago. You can see the bullet holes and the swordslashes, and you wonder how many graves were filled by the struggles, and if bations will always regard wat as being necessary to progression.

Stretched across the barrack battlements, their maules pointed tone park, where children play and veterans take their air.ngs, are big, war-worn cannon. Over here, fixed to the chapel wall; ura tablets in the memory of officers who directed the bombard. ments. The guns are useless; the others--~~ The old corporal concludes the tale with a salute—a salute to memories.
