Nitzsche a special study. Who shall figure out the ideas that coursed through his mind as be toiled over his thesis by night, while the thoughts of the babe that was shortly to be born into the world, and of his wife, mingled with his philosophical speculations and fam- bled with the bizarre characters of that. Ger man romantic literature, the lusanity of which he was labouring to define?
fire, and
It is a belief of theosophical sect that only by fire can the spitit be cleansed and render. ed worthy to return whence it came,
The body, this school teaches, is but the envelope in which the spirit is bald for the short time that it moves upon the earth. To free the spirit, the body must be consumed by would not until the envelope, the shell, the clay in which the spirit has been imprisoned is com pletely consumed by fire the spirit effectually esenper And Muenter insisted upon the cremation of his wife's body. He proposed to have it done here. He did, in fact, have the remains cremated as soon as the body reached | Chicago.
As the strange, weird, uncanny circumstances of the case are considered, the conviction grows that it is one not for the police court but for the alienists. What of the wonderful belief which war pursued even to the paint of murder re- cently by Herrich, another scientist, who in the mad frenzy of masane science killed his wife that he might demonstrate the theory that at the instant of death an adept may see the spirit of the departing being float upwards, Will this mysterious Harvard case develop another such horror?

Clearances at the Harbour Office. Prante, for Canton,
The Rev. H. M. Whiteside has just reachedungkang, for Cebu. England from the. Upper Congo.
For the
past five months he has been continually with for Canton..
Mr. Stannard, and was with him at the time
that the latter was stopped by the Congo au
thorities.
*
To Reuter's representative Mr. Whiteside has given some further particulars of the cruel ties on the Congo, of which he and Mr. Stan. pard were eye-witnesses, or of which they were informed in our up the upper regions of the Marings, through a part of the Abir territory, practically unknown to missionaries or other white men, with the exception of the Congo agents.
Mr. Whiteside says that the situation on the upper reaches of this river is worse than any,
thing he has known, and that notwithstanding the fact that the Governor-General had only just concluded a tour of inspection in the region.
SENTRY SYSTEM STILL IN FORCE. The sentry system, which was condemned by the commissioner as illegal, and which the State authorities now declare is not in force- namely, the system by which armed cannibal savages are placed over the natives for the purpose of rubber collection-was in full swing, and Mr. Whiteside declares that the horrors of the rubber trade were evident on all sides. Mr. Whiteside's repnet is being communicated to the British Foreign Office.
Mr. Whiteside aid his last tour was under- taken in response to continuous appeals from the natives, who were suffering from the results of the rubber trade.

"On pulling op at the bench nearlyunja, Bo miles from our station, we were met by a scatry, who misted us by siniing that the place Per Kumano Muru, for Japan Miss was much further inland thân was actually the Frances Holmes. Mr. F. W. Belt, Mrs. G. However, we determined to visit the Yeguchi, Dr. Y. Okabe, Messrs. Y. Hasegano, town, and caise upon it in an opening in the N. M. Phot, Frances Kosado, A. R. Olivar, J. forest after two hour, march. On entering the falandoni, M. Fukuchi, Miss Khoonchai, MIS. village we found three fully-armed sentries, the A head one of whom confirmed the native testi-aware, MT. Seiki, Mr. and Mrs. and child, Mrs. T. Inouye, Messrs. mony that there were no fewer than 35 armed, Hayashi, B. Nagano, Mrs. H. Ozuru N. sentries on the place.

CRY OF THE PERSECUTED NATIVE, "While I was holding a service in the town, at which some of the armed sentries were pre- sent, some of the people called out 'Save us from Rubber, and ut the conclusion, when the sentries had gone, they pleaded with us nọi to leave them. They also begged us to go into the forest with them, and there they would show us proof of the brutalities to which they were subjected by disinterring the bodies of their people who had been murdered by the santries.

Faishurst, "Two days afterwards, on our return, we Prof. Dr. Namba, Mr. R. Kafuku, Lieut-Col. found that the whole place, which, supported a.

Mears. P. Miole, E. H. Macpherson, G. C. women, both had been calen, and we found a Huy, S. Takehar, S. M. Idid, M. Fukiu, Y. portion of the remains. On inquiring into the Sono, M. Maida, H. Plzshman and C. Cham cause of all this the head sentry merely said bers. that they had had to fight the people. The probability is that the sentries, on our departure, attacked those who had called out to us to save them from rubber, and that the natives re- taliated, with the result that the whole place was destroyed. All the natives bad fed,
DRIVEN OUT TO SEARCH FOR RUBBER. "Seventy miles further in the interior wa came to Lókonji, which place we found divided into sections, under the control of zo armed sepiries. The head sentry told us--what the people themselves had already stated—that the imale population had been driven into the forest. to collect rubber, and that they were -compelled to work on rubber collection for 24 continuous days. At the end of that period they were permitted four days' rest, and then were dispatched for another 14 days.
"I have never seen such misery as was evidenced by the whole appearance of this place. While the. sentries bad well-built and comfortable compounds, all constructed by forced labour, the wretched people themselves had only graas shelters, little better than those of the chimpanzees in the adjoining forest, the reason, of course, being that, the whole of their time being occupied in rubber collection, they
had
no leisure to look after their own homes, "We had numbers of witnesses in this vil-
loge of atrocities committed by sentries, Oat morning at eleven o'clock we endeavoured to obtain information of specific cases, but our informant said that if he attempted to give a list of the murdered people he could not do so the setting of this san. One of the methods torture in this village was for the sentries to tie the native to a stake and to put them to death by means of lighted gum copal placed
by
on their heads.
PLATFORM FOR TORTURE PURPOSES. "Here we also saw a curious platform, jo ft.. high, erected in front of the head santry's house. The latter informed us that it was a stage from which to shoot leopards, but the native evidence was that was a torture plat forms. Natives not bringing a suficient qusti tity of rubber were first besten, sometimes al. most to death, and then taken to the top of the structure and compelled to gaze at the sun un- til relatives brought the Dacessary amount of rubber at redemption,
