Te put the matter practically, let it supposed bat after a slight tiff with her husband a lady rushes to her lawyer, say ing the wishes to live by herself. If the lawyer does not care to take up the thankless office of peacemaker, a very short dialogue may follow:

AN EASY ROAD TỞ FREEDOM. "I'm tired of my husband and want to leave him for ever." "Certainly, madam. And if you complain of ill-treatment"Oh, no, he can't make me come back, can he?"No: I'm only tired of him and want to go away

by any means"

Or have me put in prison or anything? I'm afraid you'll think me foolish."

madam.

There is nothing foolish about the idea, Less than thirty years ago wives who broke the promises they made when they married were liable to punishment in that way. But that's quile abolished."

And my income-can hic touch it?" "May ask, is it settled 2 "Certainly-every penny of myself.” "Then he can do anthing."

"Then i suppose I can just do what I like?"

Well, of contre, by this action you break up your home-and with regard to your children"

1

"I don't mind about the children" (or "" have no children"); "1 want my freedom, and I'd like to know what is the best way to get it," "In the circumstances, madam, I can advise you without difficulty. Go home, pack up your things, and it."

It is thus clear that a wife who desires a separation may be in a position, virtually, to dictate it. The husband, however unwilling, may be driven to come to terms, and sign a separation deed to secure some concession rather than none at all.

LAW'S ABSURDITIES.

The last remedy should be absolutely in the discretion of the court. It was abol- ished after a well-known lady litigant' served her husband with a writ for libel and simultaneously with a legal demand for the pleasure of his company. He in return offered her a furnished house, with servants and an income; but the judge held that he would be obliged to sign an order for the bus- band's committal if he did not live with his. wife, though the writ for libel plainly showed the absurdity of such an order. But if the were allowed to make an order in a sultable cast, it would give the "Decree for the Restitution of Conjugal Rights" its

proper force in preventing separation except by the free and absolute consent of both parties.
