MAY BUBS,

BY B. DARING-GOULD,

What a burst of life and happiness door May represent! All creation is awake and smiling like a child aroused from its slumbers. In the songs of the old minstrels and Troubadours. May is a favourite theme; they could not suffer. ently express their joy, words falled them The peasantry everywhere welcomed May, as readily as do the birds, with song and dance. The maidens went forth to gather in the May bude, fresh and green in the

in the meadows. Children pick if, hold its shining flower to each other's chin, and if it shows a golden reflection on the flesh declare that is a proof that the child thus illu- minated loves butter. As if a child could be found who did not refish it!

But with all its sunshine, and its showers, and its sweet airs, May is a treacherous month, In i, about the eleventh day, come in the Ten Cold Days that are likely to cut the blossom and spoil the prospect of fruit..

In Provence the careful owners of vineyards are prepared for this wave of chill and frost; they sit up all night and watch against it. They have prepared huge bonfites af faggots and grass, and if the thermometer shows signs of falling below freezing point, the fues are kind- Led

and masses of grass or boughs of green foliage are thrown on and renewed, so as to make thick smoke, and the volume of smoke ralling over the vineyard checks the radiation of heat from the soil and the front settling on. the vines,

In the orchard 'districts of Devon 'the cold days of May are called Francóni 189, and are thought to be specially 19, 27, and zı May, A frost then it faial to the apple blossom.

SATAN AND THE BREWERS. According to one version of the story, there was, once upon a time, an Exeter brewer, of "the name of Frankin, who found that cider ran kisala so hard that ha 'vowed his soul to the Evil One on condition that he would send three frosty nights in May annually to cut off the apple-blossom.

The other version is that the brewers in North Davon entered into a compact with the devil, and promised to adulterate their ale on condition that be should help them in killing the blossom. of the apple trees. Accordingly, whenever these May frosts come, we know that his majesty is fulfilling his part of the en gagement because they have fulfilled their in adulterating the beer.

The wave of cold that passes over the caua. try in the middle of May is easily explained.

It is due to the moving, southward of the Greenland ice that breaks away in May. If the papers be studied at that period it will almost certainly be found recorded that such and such of the steamare to New York have encountered icebergs. These masses of ice and floods of cold water chill the air, and do the mischief to our May buds,

I really

am sorry to spoil the pleasure of any creature that is having a good time in May. But I could not help myself yesterday. Walk- ing in a wood, I saw something moving restless- ly, and on looking closer saw a huge tond. An adder had ho'd of it by the hind legs, and was alowly but surely gulping it down.

SUPERSTITIONS OF THE MONTH.

Talking of snakes, there is a pretty general superstition among the peasantry that May cats should not be reared, as they bring snakes into the house, Singularly enough, precisely the same superstition exists in the South of France.

Another, and very prevalent, idea is that a blanket should not be washed in May or you wash a life out of the house in the year.

May dew was thought to be a sovereign remedy against freckles and excellent for the complexion. In Germany, at the beginning of this month, everyone makes a point of drinking May wice: this is nothing but wood-ruff soaked in white wind. There is reason in this-it purifies the blood.. For the same reason our forefathers made us drink dandelion tea in May.

There is

sense, also, in the idea that it is unlucky to have a branch of may (white-thom) in the house, for the scent is strong and not ploasunt, and causes headaches and makes some people faint.

But what connection can May cats have with serpents)--Morning Leader.
